Principal's Message

Following our 8th of June update, we have received information from the Ministry of Education outlining expectations for schools under Alert Level 1.

What does Alert Level 1 look like at Tauranga Primary School?

  • We will continue the promotion of regular hand washing and use of hand sanitiser as well as coughing/sneezing protocols.
  • Please continue to keep your child at home if they are sick, or showing signs of being unwell and please do not come to the school site if you are unwell.
  • Drinking fountains will be open, but your child having their own drink bottle is a good healthy option to continue.
  • The beginning of the day drop off and end of day pick up: there is no need to register when you are briefly onsite, as schools do not need to keep a contact register. If you are onsite during class hours you will still need to sign in at the school office.
  • Picking up your child in school hours: continue to come to the office to sign out and sign your child back in when returning.
  • Sports teams: no need to fill in a contact register by coaches/managers/spectators.
  • Assemblies: teams will have assemblies with no restriction. Once the hall is available again we will recommence whole school assemblies as well.
  • Should you or your family have a need to travel overseas, we ask that you follow all government protocols for the safety of yourself, your family, our school and our community.

We would like to capitalise on the positives gained from Level 2 procedures at school. We would like to maintain our morning routine of "kiss and go" at drop off. The children (especially juniors) have benefitted from the increased independence and really developed their self-manager skills over these last few weeks with this routine. In addition, parents have been able to park close by and are making good time to drop off of pre-school siblings and/or start their work day.

We do recognise the importance of touching base and our juniors (in particular) sharing their learning, classroom and play with parents weekly. Therefore we will trial “Whānau Friday” for the junior classes, for the remainder of the term. Parents are invited into the junior classrooms on Friday mornings from 8:30am to 9:15am to play with the children. There won't be any formal instruction at this time. Teachers will take the roll at 9:15am, and that will be your signal to say goodbye.

Junior classes offer a pick up and go at 2:50pm. The playground is closed until 3.00, please do not stay and play if you are picking up early as this disrupts classes and is unfair on the children who are still in class. All children are released into parents care at 3:00pm; the playground will be available then.

The pick up and go junior time is intended to help with the traffic congestion at the school gate. The pick up and go routine across the school, in Level 2, had a very positive influence on keeping traffic flowing, creating parking options and making the exit from school safer for our children.

Please park with consideration for our neighbours and their properties. Parking on the berm is not allowed in sign posted areas. The parking in 5th Avenue Family Practice is for patients only.

We suggest that you have a regular pick up spot, especially for children 7 years and older; they are more than capable of packing their gear and meeting you. If you find your child is not yet great at organising themselves, this is the perfect time to work on it.Together you can come up with some helpful strategies (that don't include mum or dad doing it for them) and set it up as a goal to achieve this term. Use the 'school rules' as motivation....eg "Mrs Hawes has said the rule is ......"

I am more than happy to back you up as necessary. I am out on Fifth Avenue most afternoons.

We have had some feedback about keeping the playground closed signs out at 3:00pm as this eliminates any 'debates' between children and parents about leaving. We are interested in your feedback about this. Please do email me your ideas or opinions or have a quick chat with me at the school gate.

Travel Safe Messages:

  • If you are crossing on Fifth or Sixth Avenues with children, can you please use the pedestrian crossings. When parents model safe road crossing behaviour it is a lot easier to teach it at school.
  • U-Turns on Fifth Avenue, especially around pick up time, disrupt traffic flow; in some instances this can be quite unsafe. Where possible please follow the flow of traffic.
  • Please note that the Accessible car parking space on Fifth Avenue now has yellow road markings painted. Please only use this space if you have a mobility parking permit. There are still several parents using this as a drop off and pick up park.
  • Parking is monitored via the parking cameras on Fifth and Sixth Avenues, and ticketing will re-commence from the 15th June.

Learning Conferences 17th and 18th June

Learning Conferences will be held after school on:

Wednesday 17th June 3:15 - 7:00pm

Thursday 18th June 3:15 - 7:00pm

The conferences will be 15 minutes long. You will have the opportunity to discuss how your child has settled back into school, their learning progress, and to set some learning goals together.

Year 3 and 4 Students working in the hall will be meeting with their child’s Literacy teacher, as Literacy is the learning focus area this term.

Parents of these children should have received an email to clarify who your child’s Literacy teacher is.

Support Staff Week

At TPS we have the most amazing support staff, this includes office/administration staff, caretakers, Sport Coordinator, ESOL tutors, IT technician and Teacher Aides/Assistants.

This week is Support Staff week and we would like to thank our support staff for the fantastic job they do each and every day to ensure:

  • our school runs smoothly
  • parent queries are answered efficiently
  • school financial systems are sound
  • our school grounds and buildings are well maintained and safe
  • that sport opportunities are well organised and accessible
  • children are supported with learning challenges in the classroom and the playground
  • teachers and school leadership are supported to do their jobs well
  • that TPS is a happy and safe place for us all to learn and grow

No dogs on the school site

This year we have noticed an increase in dog poop left around the school site. As children are playing, rolling around in and (in summer) eating on these grassed areas, we have made the decision to ban dogs from the school site.

Signs have now been installed on school fences, we are asking that all parents, the Farmers Market and other after hours users of our site are respectful of this new rule.

Friends of the School (FOTS)

The Friends of the School met on Tuesday 2nd June. Fiona gave everyone a brief overview of the new Level 2 practices around the school and a report of happenings around the school such as the building project and the cross country. We started planning for upcoming events in terms 3 and 4, in particular the School Disco (24th Sept- to be confirmed) and the School Production. We are planning to have a couple of Donut Fridays this term so keep an eye out for the dates. We are raising money to help fund a Junior water play area. We are always looking for new members of the FOTS and would love to see you at the next meeting- Term 3 on Tuesday 28th July at 6:30pm.
