PS 88Q Weekly Update

August 26, 2020

Ready , Set, Almost Ready to Go!

I am sure, like me, we watch the news and read about what schools around the country are doing to prepare for September. It can be very overwhelming having so much information coming from so many sources. The New York City Department of Education is building their own Return To School Plan as well. It has required a lot of flexibility and enormous amount of patience from all of us throughout this time. I want to thank you for being such a supportive community, not only to PS 88Q, but to each other. #TogetherIsBetter!

You received an email at your @nycstudent email on Monday, August 24th indicating which Cohort your child will be in. To receive the email, you must activate your student account. This email and this account is what you child will be using for their Google Classroom. This email will continue with your child for the duration of their time in the NYC school system. If you have not done so, please follow the steps below. Once you activate it, you can see all things related to your child. Also, you can join my Google Classroom. Your child will be attached in the coming days to their new Google Classroom as well with the nycstudent email. We will no longer be using the ps88q domain, as the DOE is supporting the nycstudent accounts.

Arrival and Dismissal Procedures

Like many things around us, arrival and dismissal will look different. We have redesigned how each student will enter and exit the building, and how they move around. All schools will be contact tracing to avoid any unnecessary traffic throughout the building. Included in the email you received about the cohort, you received your child's class number, room number and entry door. Students will remain in their "section" of the building with the same classes who enter through the same door. Students will have their temperature taken upon arrival, proceed to their classroom and remain in their room. Some classrooms have bathrooms in the classroom, but for those who do not, they will have a designated bathroom for use. Each bathroom will have a staff member to monitor it and ensure social distancing and safety. The staff member will monitor the hall as well, as students will not walk throughout the building.

Family Town Hall with Mrs. O'Shaughnessy

Please join me on Wednesday, August 26th @ 6pm for our Weekly Parent Meeting. The zoom link can be found in Ms. Ramos' classroom as well as my classroom. Also, the link was included in the letter you received through your child's email with the cohort information.

Cooking at PS 88Q: Common Threads

P.S. 88Q was so happy to receive a grant from Assemblywoman Cathy Nolan for Common Threads. This program began in our building, pre-pandemic. Ms. Ramos, our Parent Coordinator organized the grant. Students had the opportunity to cook in our own kitchen at PS 88Q and parents had their own time as well. As we transitioned into remote learning, Common Threads transitioned too! What could only provide an opportunity to a small group of students in brick and mortar school, was now available to over 100 students. It was such an amazing experience for all of us! Please read about it through the eyes of one of our teachers, Ms. DiGregorio and one of our parents, Ms. Wang Silonga. This is a great example of how remote learning created a larger space for students to learn!
