What's New @ the Library
December 2017
Sharyland High School Leads Region One High Schools in Accessing eBooks
Congratulations to our students and staff! We are once again at the top of the Region One Leader Board for access to eBooks. MackinVIA is an awesome digital book tool. Want to know more about it? Call or email Nicole Cruz. She can come to your classroom and provide a quick demo.
Texas Youth Creator Awards
We had a total of 19 projects submitted by both SHS and SA3 students for the Texas Youth Creator Awards. The photo below is a graphic design submitted by SA3 student Jessica Boetcher. Out of 10 categories, we submitted in 7 categories. We expect to share good results sometime in March. Now the waiting begins.
Alumni Snapshot Campaign
Do you know a 2017 SHS Graduate? We have had more than 10 SHS alumni submit photos of themselves on their university or college campus to promote college readiness in our buildings and hallways. Send vpena@sharylandisd.org a quick email including the name and contact information. We'll reach out to them for a photo, too.
Javier Gonzalez pictured below is attending UTRGV and majoring in computer science.
Coding Connects Us Club
Our Coding Connects Us Club received an Education Foundation Grant for multiple projects. This is a new club that is open to SHS and SA3 students. The club meets weekly at the library training lab on Thursdays from 4-5 pm. We welcome new students in January.
McAllen Public Library & Mission Speer Memorial
Need a good read over the holiday? Visit the McAllen Public Library or Mission Speer Memorial Library. Beyond having great resources, they offer fun programs for all ages.
Sharyland High School Students Enter Writing Competition
Congratulations to the following seniors: Ana Quintero, VIridiana Lozano, Aileen Salinas, and Perla Garcia. Each of these students selected a book or poem to read. After reading their selection, they wrote a letter to the author explaining how her/ his work inspired them or helped them to see the world in a new light. Their entries for the Letters About Literature Competition have been mailed to the Library of Congress. Help Mrs. Cruz recognize them. Their effort and hard work beyond expectations truly exemplify Rattler Core Values.
Online Safety Lessons
Thank you very much for your support for sending students to complete the online safety lessons. SHS is at 99-100% and SA3 is close to 98% complete. We have a few students who may need to complete or are newly enrolled. We'll work on getting to 100% in January. We want our students to be aware of their rights, privileges, and responsibilities regarding online behavior and use. Let's keep them aware so they can make smart choices.
