Dear Hills Students and Families:

Happy Spring! There is a new energy with the weather change and with 100% on site or online, and we are excited for these next 10 weeks of learning. This is an important time to capture as much learning as possible, and it will take diligence in completing work during and outside of school hours to make the greatest impact. Reading each day, reviewing math facts, and spending time with Lexia and Dreambox, as well as, completing other homework are significant for every student at Hills. With the beautiful weather, it may be challenging to get these accomplished. It might help to set up a schedule for after school hours that give your children exercise, activities and time to complete school work.

Our attendance has greatly improved! We are averaging over 94% in attendance each day. Thank for your help in getting your student(s) to school on time or on line on time. We want to continue the great efforts in attendance and works towards active engagement in their learning. This month we are working to have 95% of the students in school each day.

We wish you all the best in this season of spring. Enjoy this time and be safe.

Message from the Hills Ball Association:

The Hills Ball Association is planning to have a fun focused opportunity for kids to get together and work on baseball, softball, and teamwork skills this summer. There will be no travelling for games like in previous years. If we get enough kids to join, we will be able to make teams and scrimmage against each other. As I said earlier, these leagues are extremely fun focused and non-competitive. If you would like your child to join a competitive team, there are leagues available in Iowa City and Riverside. We will plan our leagues around those city teams as best we can so there is little to no conflict if you decide to join both leagues.

These leagues will be free to join this year!

Leagues will begin mid-June and will run through July.

For grades PreK-6

Baseball, softball, and t-ball.

We need volunteers! Let us know if you can help with coaching and/or umpiring when we have games.

Find us on Facebook! We have a new Facebook group where you will be able to find up to date information about our ball leagues, volunteer opportunities, and other exciting things we are planning this year!

If you have any questions or are interested in volunteering please email me at heather.kuep@gmail.com, or call/text me at 319-333-4516 (Please leave a voicemail if I do not answer).

We will be sending a registration form home with your children later this spring. Be on the lookout for that and return it to school or to the address listed on the form. For those of you in the online group, please reach out to me if you would like to sign up.

West High Summer Camps

Attention 6th Grade Parents

REQUIRED IMMUNIZATIONS

Per Iowa law, 7th grade students must have a Meningococcal vaccine (to prevent meningitis, a bacteria that infects the brain, blood and spinal cord) and a Tdap booster (to prevent tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis/whooping cough).

Please check your child’s immunization record or call their health care provider to find out if they have received the Tdap booster and Meningococcal vaccines and make an appointment if needed. Johnson County Public Health also provides immunizations and can be reached at 319-356-6045. If your child does not have insurance, please reach out to Healthy Kids Clinic. Call or text 319-631-3204 to make an appointment. Please turn in an updated “Certificate of Immunization” before the new school year begins. Your child will not be able to attend school without these required vaccines.

A Way to Monitor Your Student's Activity Online - Google Hangouts

Using Securly to Monitor and Restrict Your Child’s Internet Activity

Did you know that parents have the ability to see your child(ren)'s internet activity on District devices, and to set additional limits beyond those established by the District? ICCSD is entering its fourth year of using Securly, a service that filters internet access on District devices and also includes the SecurlyHome Parent Hub, which parents can use to monitor internet usage, receive usage notifications, and establish limits on what your child can access. You may have already received an email from Securly when your child was issued their 1:1 device. You can access Securly at https://www.securly.com/parent-login, and your login email will be the primary email address listed for your child(ren)'s contacts in PowerSchool. If you have trouble accessing Securly, please verify your primary contact email in PowerSchool or contact your child's school to do so. You can also contact Securly support if you've confirmed your email in PowerSchool and are still having trouble accessing Securly.

Google Hangouts is a program that is part of the G Suite for Education. Some classes across the district utilize this platform for collaboration and instruction.

As with all programs, students are expected to follow district technology expectations when using this program. These expectations include interacting respectfully and responsibly, only using programs that are approved by teachers/parents, and reporting anything that is concerning to a teacher/parent.

During the school day, we teach, reinforce, and reteach these technology expectations as needed.

When students are off-site it is up to parents and families to establish and monitor student access. The Iowa City Community School District provides parents the ability to restrict content that students have access to on District devices when off-campus. Please check out this resource page, which includes a description of the Securely Parent Portal and a video showing how parents can use the portal to block sites and services that they do not want their children to access. Hopefully, you received an invitation email for the Securely parent portal, but if not, you can reach out to Beth Nelsen (nelsen.elizabeth@iowacityschools.org) to make sure that you are registered for that service.

At a district level, Google Hangouts is restricted to in-district communication only. There is also an option for us to request chat transcripts if there is a concern that the service is being misused.
