The Weekly FIRE
Flexibility, Integrity, Respect, Effort
issue 17: 02/16/2021
Hello Dragons-
We are about halfway through Black History Month and I want to thank all of you for the contributions you have made so far. I have so enjoyed learning from all of you.
This week, I want to talk a little bit about someone I really admire- Janet Mock.
Janet Mock is an African American and Native Hawaiian journalist, writer, producer, director and activist. Ms. Mock was born in Honolulu in 1983 and grew up in Hawaii. After earning a master’s degree in journalism from New York University she started her career as a journalist with People Magazine. While working at People, Ms. Mock came out publicly as a transgender woman in an interview with Marie Claire in 2011. In 2014, she published a best-selling memoir titled Redefining Realness describing her experiences as a black trans woman.
Ms. Mock is also a writer, director and producer of the TV show Pose. Pose is a show whose main characters are all trans women of color in New York in the late 80s and early 90s. She is the first openly trans woman of color to be hired as a writer for a television series and the first to write and direct a television episode.
Here she is speaking at the 2017 Women’s March on Washington.

Animal Guide of the Week:
-Laura Craford, RLA Social Worker
For those of you who do not know what the animal cards mean…
Each newsletter I will pull a card from my deck of animal guide cards, it is our message for the week—something we need to think about, understand or that we need to remember about ourselves or a situation. This is something that I have been doing with RLA students and staff for a while now, it’s my thing. 😊 If you ever want your own card, message me (Laura) through teams or @ (740) 240-2311 and I will send you a picture of one, just like when you would come to my office for one when we were in school!

I bet you never heard of Marie Maynard Daily
-Sue Rosemarin, Science
Marie Maynard Daily was the first black woman in the United States to earn a Ph.D in Chemistry. She made important contributions in four areas of research: the chemistry of histones, protein synthesis, the relationships between cholesterol and hypertension, and creatine's uptake by muscle cells. Her interest in science was influenced by her grandparents whom had a huge library where she could read about science and scientists. She also was influenced by her father who wanted to become a chemist, but couldn't afford the schooling.
Do you know how interpersonal skills relate in the work place? Do you know what Emotional Intelligence is? Read this article and find out the answers to those two questions. Each week Kathi “The Job Lady” will give you “tips and tricks” on this and much more! If you want individual help, contact Kathi: kmorris@rsd7.net or 503-708-6540 (text is fine).
Interpersonal Skills—Playing Together Well
The ability to develop good relationships comes down to your non-technical, interpersonal skills–like empathy, patience and ability to adjust to different people. These skills related to your personality are often called "emotional intelligence."
You will not be able to ignore coworkers and supervisors with challenging personalities, so you must use interpersonal skills on the job. While you can't change people, you can develop ways to approach different personalities in order to maintain good relationships.
Avoid taking everything personally. A coworker's negative reaction may have nothing to do with you.
- A person who comes across as hostile may be worrying about something in his/her personal life, or a coworker could be stressed about her work deadlines.
- You may feel annoyed by a coworker whose manner is negative when you ask a question, yet the person's behavior may have nothing to do with you. If you respond negatively, you will contribute to the problem.
Advice: Analyze the personalities and behaviors of the people you work with and apply these methods to improve work relationships.
- Learn to handle coworkers' egos. Ego is about self-image and self-worth. People who come across as having a "big" ego may lack confidence. They cover up their shortcomings with bragging or pushiness. Listen to them and occasionally praise things they do well.
- Stop the judging. Because people are different does not make them wrong. Avoid pre-judging coworkers. Get to know them before forming an opinion.
- Communicate to fit coworkers' styles. Everyone does not take in information the same way. For those who like facts only, talk less and listen more. For those who want explanations, provide details.
- Avoid venting about work at work. Everyone gets frustrated sometimes but venting at work is dangerous. Vent your job concerns to a family member or a non-work friend.
- Show support and professionalism, even when disagreeing. Be friendly and positive.
- Offer to help. Stress caused by too much to do in too little time affects behavior. If a coworker seems overloaded with work, offer to pitch in.
