Discovery Update

February 1, 2022

A Message From the Principal

We have officially begun the second half of the school year. We just completed our school wide DIBELS reading assessment. In addition, we completed our first report card period. Report cards should be coming home February 4 or February 7. If you have questions about either the DIBELS assessment or the report card, please contact your child’s teacher.

We have some exciting events for students this month, including 100 Day Celebrations, School Spirit - Wear a Hat Day , and the Virtual Family Science Night.

Our regularly scheduled conference dates will be March 9 - 11. Teachers will get more information to you regarding conferences later this month or early in March.

In closing I want to wish you all a fantastic February! I am looking forward to the events ahead.

Parent Drop off and Pick UP

Please watch the speed when picking up students after school. Surprise Lake Middle School Principal, Mark Beddes is asking that if you need to use the SLMS area and you don't need to park, please use the drive through area next to the school entrance and not the parking area. The time we let students out at Discovery is the same time teachers and SLMS are ending their shift for the day and leaving for home. Some cars are driving too fast through the parking area and it is causing concern. If you are parking in the area to come pick up your student note that there is one entrance and one exit. There are signs directing how the flow should go.

Read and Lead Update

Time to celebrate! Discovery students have been hard at work doing their at home reading! The top 3 classes from each grade level for the month of December have earned a surprise ice cream party, provided by Milton Grocery Outlet. Additionally, the classes with the highest participation for the semester (October-December) have earned a Playdoh party! Reading for at least 10 minutes every day is great for developing a love of reading and has been proven to improve reading and writing skills. Be sure you are tracking your student's reading on the monthly recording log and turn in to your child's teacher at the end of each month. Next semester's celebration will be a Glow Stick Party! Keep reading, Discovery Rockets!
