Newsletter Week 1 Term 4
Shelly Park School - Wednesday 19 October 2022
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Parents and Whānau
Class Placements
At this time of the year we are well and truly looking towards 2023. Strategic planning, budgeting and class and teacher placements are top of the list. With this in mind Shelly Park has traditionally given parents the opportunity to contribute to the large puzzle that is “Class Placements”.
If you feel you would like to contribute your thoughts towards your child’s class placement for 2023 please send an email to edr@shellypark.school.nz. If you would like to write a letter instead, then please address this to the principal and mark it confidential. Please understand that this is not a ‘choose your teacher’ opportunity. This is a chance for you to indicate certain factors that you believe, as parents, we need to know when placing students for the coming year.
Team Leaders and I will be placing children into classes for next year as soon as we know the number of rooms we will have available. A lot of time and effort is put in by staff as we consider a wide range of factors. Compatibility of peers, siblings, gender, cultural background, the balance of ability/work habits within a class and children’s specific learning needs are all taken into account. It is a very close and personal exercise. Sometimes it is logical for a child to continue with a teacher, or with a group but judgements are made around that and we consider all children. I remind parents that we cannot have “classes of one” when letters seek separation from particular students. Remember, our aim at Shelly Park is to build confident, caring connected community contributors who continue to grow their resilience and empathy toward one another.
Another factor into our class placements for next year is around the New Zealand curriculum refresh. Due to the changes that are being made some of our decisions around composite classrooms may change. We are working on how this will all look.
Similarly, if your family won’t be with us next year, PLEASE LET US KNOW as the placement of pupils in classes affects the balance for all teachers and pupils.
Please send all emails or letters through by Monday the 21st of November.
Fun Fest
Shelly Park Fun Fest 2022 is fast approaching on Sunday 13th November and this is a fantastic family day aimed at bringing the whole community together after these last few years (along with being one of our school's biggest fundraisers). Some highlights include: Face Painting, Food Stalls, Entertainment, Pre-loved Children's clothes, books and toys, A REAL-LIFE DIGGER (huge thanks to Lee Wansbury and his business Restore Landscaping, Garden Design and Property Restoration!) Coffee & Cakes, Games, Mystery Envelopes and so much more!
This event can only happen with your help, so we are asking each school family / whanau to volunteer 1 hour of time (by one person in the family) on the day to ensure the event's success. To those who have already volunteered, a huge thank you!
PTLs will send through the zone and time slot allocation for each family in the next week or so but please hold the date for now, and we look forward to this being one of our most successful school events ever!
Board of Trustees Quiz Night -ROYALTY- Save the date
Get excited, the Board has decided on a date and the legendary Board Quiz Night is confirmed. Please save Saturday 26th of November in your diaries. The theme is ROYALTY, so get your thinking caps on. Tickets will go on sale in the next few weeks.
School Pool Keys
We will be selling pool keys at the school office from next Tuesday, 25th of October. You will be able to use the school pool from next week through Easter. Keys will be $80 for Shelly Park Families and $150 for non Shelly Park Families.
Help
We are currently designing a one pager that gives staff, students and families and overall picture of what we stand for at Shelly Park. In this one pager we have our vision, our motto, our school values, the capabilities we want students to grow and the our anchor stones, which are the things that we are grounded in. We are looking for help from a person or people who have a background in graphic design or creativity that can bring our thoughts together on one page. We want this page to reflect our local community, our history and what we stand for. We are happy with our wording, we are just not happy with how it looks and how it all ties together. We have started the process but we don't feel that it is connected enough, it feels disjointed, so I am putting it out to the community to help us get it right. I have attached what we have so far and would love the communities input.

The last working bee in 2020 was a huge success with lots of families getting involved and transforming a number of
spaces around the school. Along with the incredible difference it makes to the physical environment, it’s a wonderful way
to meet other families in the school community.
If you can’t make that date but would still like to do an hour or two over the next 2 months please get in touch and we can
give you a small area to get stuck into
Entertainment Book
Thank you to those who have recently purchased an entertainment book. The PTA truly does appreciate the extra funds
that the school gains from each purchase. All memberships last 12 months from the date of purchase.
Every membership sold gives 20% back to our school! Please support our school with this fundraiser, and share this
link with family, friends and work colleagues. Use this link to find out more! https://nz.entdigital.net/orderbooks/954z61
