Dear West TV families,


I hope you are having a wonderful summer!


The office is open each day now until school begins (see above for office hours). Please stop by anytime or call if you have questions.


I will receive information later this month from the district with guidance for the coming school year, but wanted to send you information now that will be especially useful for families new to West TV.


Below are answers to some frequently asked questions.


This newsletter is being sent to families with students in grades 1 through 5 (a similar newsletter was sent to Kindergarten families with this information and also information that is specific only to Kindergarten).

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the first day of school?

Tuesday, September 6 for students in grades 1-5.


Half of our kindergarteners will start on Thursday, September 8 and be off on Friday, September 9. The other half will be off on Thursday and start on Friday.


All kindergarteners will attend school together on Monday, September 12.


Will families be able to visit the school and classrooms prior to the start of school?

Yes. We will be hosting a Meet & Greet event on Thursday, September 1, 2022 at 4:30pm. At this event you can drop off any school supplies, say a brief hello to the teacher and take a self tour of the school if you would like.


What are the normal hours for school?

The school day begins at 8:00am and ends at 2:35pm. You can drop off your student at 7:45am. Please no earlier than 7:45am, as there are no staff available for supervision.


What is the process for picking up and dropping off students?

Student Arrival - Morning Drop Off

  • All cars and buses will drop off ONLY in the right lane

  • Our goal is to get cars in and out of the car drop off lane as quickly as possible since both cars and buses will be using the same lane to drop off students.

  • If you need to assist your child in any way with getting out of the car, please do not use the car drop off lane - instead we ask that you pull into a parking space in the lower parking lot and walk your child over to the flag pole and say goodbye.

  • If the car drop off line is too long, feel free to park and walk your student to the flagpole.

  • Students will walk to the covered area on the playground and be supervised until the bell rings at 7:50am unless they are having breakfast - all breakfast eaters can go directly into the cafeteria at 7:45am.


Student Dismissal - After School Pick Up

  • Students will be dismissed at 2:35pm

  • Students that ride a bus will go directly to the bus

  • Parents that walk to the school will wait next to the big tree that is just behind the flagpole with the benches underneath (between the school and playground)

  • Parents that drive to school to pick up their student will get in the left lane and pull up to the gym doors underneath the breezeway - students will wait inside the gym and be brought out to cars picking up (drivers are asked to place a paper in driver’s side window with the names of student and classroom teacher to assist the staff when retrieving students from the gym - here’s a template you can use: template)


Is after-school care offered at our school?

Yes. There is on site care as well as off site options. See below for more information.


When do families find out who their child's teacher will be?

Wednesday, August 31. An email will be sent to each family.


How do families ensure that their child will have a lunch to eat on the first day?

Students can bring lunches from home or purchase lunches in the school cafeteria. Staff will be available to assist students with purchasing lunches using their student numbers for the first few weeks of school.


If your child will be purchasing lunch, there are two ways to add money to your account: 1) pay at school; cash or checks are accepted in the school cafeteria or 2) pay online. SchoolCafé can be used for online payments. There’s a small fee for using SchoolCafé to make deposits.


How much does breakfast and lunch cost?

Breakfast costs $1.65; lunch costs $3.05.


If students eat breakfast at school, when should they arrive? How do they get to class after breakfast?

Students can arrive for breakfast at 7:45am and directly enter at the cafeteria doors. Staff will direct them to their classroom after eating.

How do families apply for free or reduced-cost school meals?

If you believe your student qualifies for free or reduced-cost meals, please visit the Meal Benefits webpage to apply.


How are food allergies handled?

If your student has any food allergies, please make sure you have filled this information when you review/update your student’s online enrollment verification in ParentVue - see district email sent to all BSD families on August 2, 2022. If you need help or have any questions, please call the school office (503) 356-2510.


How do families find out about bus routes? Do families need to register?

If a student qualifies for busing, families will receive a message from Transportation with their student’s route information via ParentSquare on Monday, August 29. Elementary students who live more than one mile from school qualify for busing; families do not need to register.


Do families need to buy school supplies?

Yes; however, if any of the supplies cannot be purchased, the school will provide them. School Supply List 22-23


What will students need to bring to school on their first day?

Students should bring a coat or jacket, water bottle, backpack, snack and lunch (if needed). Please make sure to label your students items with their name on it. This will help us when items end up in the Lost & Found.

Child Care Options for 22-23

YMCA

Each year at West TV there is an on site child care provider - it is the YMCA. YMCA offers both before and after school child care. Please contact the YMCA directly to reserve a spot for your child. Call 503-608-3126.


Barnes-Miller Learning Tree

This child care option is off site - one of our school buses will bring students to/from the school that attend Barnes-Miller Learning Tree. Please contact them directly to reserve a spot for your child. Call 503-292-7847.


Kindercare

This child care option is off site - one of our school buses will bring students to/from the school that attend Kindercare. Please contact them directly to reserve a spot for your child. Call 503-641-6758.


Thrive

Thrive (Cedar Hills Rec Center) offers after school child care only and has a van that picks up from West TV. Please contact them directly to reserve a spot for your child. Call 503-629-6340.

5th grade gift to West TV

Each year the 5th graders give a gift to the school. The gift in 2021was replacing the Little Free Library in the parking lot and purchasing brand new books for it.


History of the Little Free Library

The Little Library was started by Andy Owens, who attended West TV from 1992 -1996. He decorated the Little Free Library and every week would come to West TV to clean up and reload books for children of all ages. It was a free library and children could take books, borrow books, or leave books.


Andy Owens passed away in 2017


All families are welcome to use the Little Free Library - donate a book, take a book or both!
