Happy New Year!

January 4-8, 2016

Welcome 2016!

I hope you all enjoyed your break and had time to relax and enjoy time as a family. I certainly enjoyed my time off and I am excited to get back to school to see friendly faces!

Reading

This week the reading selection is called, Author: A True Story. Students will read an autobiography written and illustrated by Helen Lester, author of the Tacky, the Penguin books. The skill is identifying the author's purpose and the strategy is to summarize. In spelling, students will have words with the following consonant pairs--gn, kn and wr. (Unit 2, Week 5)

Writing

During our writing block this week we will focus on Goal Setting, SMART Goals, and Being Proactive, Habit 1 in the Leader in Me program. A S.M.A.R.T. goal is defined as one that is specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bound. Students will look at examples and non examples of goals to determine if the goal is SMART. They will then set their own goals to help them as they progress through third grade.

Math

We will finish up Chapter 4 on multiplication and have the chapter assessment next week. Students have learned a variety of strategies to solve for the product in word problems. It is very important for students to know these facts "off the top of their heads"! Please take time to work with flash cards or even verbally ask your child to tell you the products for the factors that you say. The fluency of reciting the facts helps tremendously.

Science

We will start a new science unit on "Rocks, Minerals, and Soil" (chapter 7). Students should know the meaning of the vocabulary words and understand the three different types of rocks--igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. We'll spend a couple of weeks on this chapter.
