What's Happening in 5th Grade?
Math
We started Topic 7 this week which covers adding and subtracting fractions. More specifically, students are learning how to estimate adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. This is an important skill to master because when they solve the actual problem, they can use estimation to make sure their answer is reasonable. I attached a video below that explains this process.
ELA
In reading, we took our test on compare and contrast this week. We will be spending a little more time on non-fiction compare and contrast before moving on to our next unit. The next unit we will be working on is text features. We will start this at the beginning of February.
In writing, we have started working on our persuasive writing pieces. This will be continued through the rest of the 3rd-quarter.
3rd-quarter AR goals have been set. Please check with your student to see what their goal is and their plan of action to meet their goal. February 7th is mid-quarter and students should be around halfway to their goal by then.
You can visit arbookfind.com for any book information or suggestions for books that are on your child's reading level.
Science and Social Studies
Science
We have finished our unit on Earth’s Spheres. A study guide was given to the children last week to help them review for the Earth’s Spheres test on Friday, January 24. We will soon be starting a new unit of study on the Earth’s Water next week. In this unit we will revisit our discussion from earlier in the year about the water cycle and discuss how water moves through the atmosphere and hydrosphere. We will also discuss where water is located within the Hydrosphere and how much of the Earth’s water can be found as saltwater versus freshwater.
Social Studies
We took a break from our studies of the Revolutionary War earlier this week to celebrate the accomplishments, contributions, and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We learned about Martin Luther King’s journey during the Civil Rights Movement and discussed several ways that Martin Luther King, Jr. helped others.
We finished this week discussing some of the first battles of the Revolutionary War and what the colonists and the Second Continental Congress had to do in order to get the former colonies ready to go to war with Britain. We will be finishing our discussion of the events leading to the American Revolution next week as we examine the Declaration of Independence.
A study guide for “The Causes of the American Revolution” was sent home with the children and emailed to parents earlier this week. The test over the “Causes of the American Revolution” will be coming up on Thursday, January 30. Extra copies of the study guide can also be found on the moon table in our classroom.
Many of the children have shared that they have already begun work on their American Revolution projects. These projects are completed for homework and directions were sent with the children last week and emailed to parents. The children only need to choose 1 of the project ideas to complete for the project. American Revolution projects will be due in the classroom on Friday, January 31.
