A Message from the Principal
Hope you are staying warm during the heart of our Wisconsin winters. Students sure seem to love playing in the snow and creating fun out hills created by the snow plow! I wanted to take a second to personally send out a warm welcome to all of you. We are having a celebration of literacy on February 13th. Our doors will be open after school from 3:00-5:00.
As a parent who is experiencing first hand how a child learns to read and write, I completely understand why a celebration of those skills is necessary! To go from recognizing letters and putting sounds to the letters, then connecting the sounds of the letters to make words, and words to make sentences---it is nothing short of an exciting miracle! What is even more impressive is just how far kids can go once they learned some of the basic skills. I have truly enjoyed watching my own child grow in her ability to read and writing and looking forward to watching my next child go through the experience!
So whether you have 4th grader who is already a pro reader or you have a 1st grader who is dabbling in the complicated world of reading and writing---you have something to celebrate!!! Please consider joining us.
Our goal is to provide an opportunity for your child to "show off" just how far they have come in their learning. Showing an interest in their learning is a great way to support your child's growth and development.
While you're here for parent conferences or our celebration of literacy also be sure to check out the STAR growth posters on our wall near the office. So proud of the kids and our teachers! We had 57% of our students meet their winter STAR goal, and 91% of our students had significant growth from the fall STAR assessment to the winter STAR assessment. Way to go Garfield!!

Garfield teachers know how to teach writing! Garfield students are learning how to write through a workshop model in the classroom. The writing process is messy but fun. Here are some student samples for you to enjoy.

School Counseling Update--Leslie Nemmers
When students practice self-control, they are taking charge of their own behavior. They do not allow feelings to dictate actions. They can acknowledge feelings and channel feelings into healthy actions. Our 3rd and 4th grade students worked in the classroom with the Healthy Youth Coalition and myself, this month to gain a better understanding of self -control. Students learned more about the value of self -control by watching 3 different skits, performed by our local Marinette High School HYC members. Students also participated in a classroom discussion and activities.
Our second graders are learning more about domestic violence this month. Shannon Sexton, a youth Advocate for the Rainbow House has been speaking in all 2nd classrooms. The goal of the lessons are to create an awareness about domestic violence, the effects on a family and how the Rainbow House can assist.
Currently, our 1st and 3rd graders have been working hard in our classroom guidance lessons. We are continuing to use the 2nd Step Program which promotes school success. By directly teaching students the skills that strengthen their ability to: learn, have empathy, manage emotions and solve problems. The 2nd Step lessons strive to develop students social-emotional competencies and self-regulation skills. If you have any questions about the School Counseling please feel free to contact Ms. Nemmers at 715-735-1506.
