Mrs. Ryberg - January 10, 2018
WELCOME BACK!!
School Goodies
BE WEATHER WISE - As winter starts to roll in, please know that the district policies for cancellations and dismissals can be found HERE on the main website. Additionally, please be conscious of the weather and make sure your student knows your plan for what to do if there is an early release.
On that note, please send coats, hats, gloves, etc. - we will always try to go out for recess if the temperature "feels like" 25 or higher. Also, our room can get a little chilly, so a jacket for the room is also a good idea.
Academics - here's what we are working on in class
Integrating non-fiction: In class we are learning about Martin Luther King, Jr. What better way to study non-fiction texts and their elements? Students are learning what makes a non-fiction text NON-FICTION (i.e. glossaries, indexes, charts & graphs). Since we are learning about these parts and looking for them in books and articles, we are also taking the information we are learning about Martin Luther King, Jr. to create non-fiction digital texts ourselves with the StoryCreator app. Likewise, we are using information about measurement, charts and graphs, etc. from our non-fiction texts in our math practices.
ELA Focus: While we are working as a class to investigate non-fiction and write informational texts, we made some changes to small groups this week to focus on areas of missing skills in Language Arts. Your student may bring home some "flash cards" for homework - if they do, please read through the words with them and practice them each night. As always, have your student read to you to practice the skills they are working on in class. Even great readers need to practice reading!!
