AMAZING THINGS ARE HAPPENING - Starting Class with a Greeting
Annnnnnd we're back! Welcome back NP3! Arrrrgh!
As we return to a new semester, we think about how we will begin the week. How will we welcome back colleagues and students? How will we start a new semester in PE, science, social studies, math, English, advisory, enrichment, and intervention? We think about how we will re-address expectations, norms, and procedures. Will there be changes or will they stay the same as last semester? Will each period have varied expectations, or will they stay consistent throughout the day? There are many aspects to consider when beginning a new part of the school year and each component is important. It all starts with the beginning of class.
The beginning of class is an important part of the period. It is where we start our communication and connection with our students. It is important to be clear and concise with expectations during this time, as students need direction and expectations to work toward. Students not only need clear and concise expectations, but they also need practice with meeting these expectations. This means the teacher is in control of setting the bar and accepting if the students achieved it or not. It is equally important to consider how you present yourself and the energy you want to convey, as students feed off of this and it can influence them. Consider being a student yourself. Imagine entering three of your class periods; your first period has Kramer as your teacher, another has Bob Ross, and another Lieutenant Dan. How would their different tone and energy affect your choices during class?
It is clear that NP3 staff has been thoughtful and purposeful about how they greet students. Amazing things are happening! Some classes begin their class outside, with a quiet and organized line, teacher greeting and beginning instructions. Some classes begin inside, with a set routine of how to enter the class. Other classes use a routine warm-up or do-now that is prepared in advance for students to begin as they enter class. Way to go NP3!
