UIL Music Memory 2nd – 5th Grade

Students will be receiving information soon about UIL teams.

2nd – 5th grade students have the opportunity to try-out for the Music Memory Team.

Here is some basic information about the competition.

The focus of the Music Memory contest is an in-depth study of fine pieces of music literature taken from a wide spectrum of music genres to expose students to great composers, their lives and their music. In the course of preparing for the contest, students should be given the opportunity to describe and analyze the music, relate the music to history, to society and to culture, and to evaluate musical performance.

Students will listen to approximately 20 seconds of up to 20 musical selections and identify the name of the major work, selection and the name of the composer. Music Memory reviews will be held after school, but most of the learning and reviewing must happen at home with supplied resources.

Friendly Reminders

A few reminders as we begin our year:
1. Please make sure that your child wears tennis shoes on PE days.
2. Please make sure that on Art days they are not wearing that new outfit. It's art and sometimes things can get messy.
3. Please make sure that your child is bringing their recorder to music class.

Character Traits that we are looking for in our Beck Bull Dogs. This Month of October we are talking about Respect.

Treat others with respect; follow the Golden Rule • Be tolerant and accepting of differences • Use good manners, not bad language • Be considerate of the feelings of others • Don’t threaten, hit or hurt anyone • Deal peacefully with anger, insults, and disagreements

Art Workshops

It’s time to sign up for the fall art workshops! This year we are offering some fun and exciting art workshops for all grades! This will be a one-time 90 minute event, in effort to include more children in workshops throughout the school year.

We will meet in the art room from 2:55-4:25, unless otherwise indicated. Unfortunately, Ms. Gamache and Ms. Foland can only take 15 students each. If you are interested, we would like you to draw a detailed picture of your choice, and tell us why you want to be in the art workshop. We will be accepting art forms up to Friday, September 30th. On Monday, October 3rd a letter will go home in Monday folders letting you know if you are an art workshop member.

*Please note: This year we will have a lottery to select workshop members, due to the large number of applications.

FALL WORKSHOPS: Please check which workshop you are applying for. Students may only attend one workshop per school year.

Specialist Grading Criteria

The electives grades (Art, Music & PE) are done in percentages during the six weeks. On the final six weeks report card it will be converted into the letter grade. We do not know why the grading system does this for elective grades. Below is a breakdown of the percentage grades. This information can be found on the Elective teacher’s website and in the district handbook. Hope you find this helpful, if you have any more question, please contact us.

GRADING SCALE for Art, Music, and Physical Education:

In all grades, including kindergarten, other areas of study such as art, music, physical education,

work habits and social behavior, student progress are marked as follows:

E (3%) = Performs at excellent/above standard consistently

S (2%) = Performs at standard expectations consistently

N (1%) = Performs slightly below standard expectations, but with continuous progress

U (0%) = Performs consistently at beginning or below standard expectation

In Art, Music, and Physical Education classes, a minimum of three (3) grades shall be recorded. At least one grade should be given each two (2) weeks.

Art, music, and physical education grades should only reflect a student’s progress on curriculum goals. Behavior and conduct are not to be included in the subject report card grade. Behavior and conduct for art, music, and physical education will be addressed through a citizenship portion of the report card for each of these areas.

Conduct grades reflect student behavior during a six-week period. The following grade designations will be used.

E (3%) (Excellent)

S (2%) (Satisfactory)

N (1%) (Needs Improvement)

U (0%) (Unsatisfactory)

A “U” must not be given unless the teacher has contacted the parent AND discussed the unsatisfactory conduct grade with a campus administrator.

If you would like to view NISD Elementary Grading Guidelines, go to Northwest district website at Next, click on “Information”, then Grading Guidelines
