Fossil Fuels
By: Kevin T.S.
What They Are
Fossil fuels are hydrocarbons, primarily coal, fuel oil, and natural gas formed from dead plants an animals; these are sometimes considered mineral fuels as well. Fossil fuels are known to have been formed after hundreds of millions of years deep within the earths layers from being packd down by sand, mud, and decomposition.
Why They're Important
These natural resources are important since they can burned, producing significant amounts of energy.
Negative Affects
Negative affects exist due to said resources; global warming, air quality deterioration, oil spills, and acid rain are all caused by the pollution expelled from fossil fuels into the air.
Affects on Earths Atmosphere
Over the last 150 years, the burning of fossil fuels has resulted in more than a 25% increase in carbon dioxide within the earths atmosphere. Fossil fuels have also helped increased levels of atmospheric methane, and nitrous oxide, even though it’s not the major cause of these gases. The ozone layer is being affected greatly by the greenhouse gases produced from fossil fuels.
