Message from Mrs. Phelan
Happy New Year!.
I love the last week of the year! It's a time when I look forward to releasing things that no longer serve me and a time to reflect on the wonderful moments of the past year. It always feels bittersweet! I hope you had a lovely vacation and had the opportunity to spend time with family, friends and pets!
I always look forward to the top 10 and top 100 lists created at the end of the year. I've share the top 100 book by TIME Magazine just in case you're looking for something to read.
We welcome back students and staff on Tuesday, January 3rd. We do not have school on Monday because we officially observe the New Year's holiday on January 2nd.
Here it to a happy, healthy year ahead,
Stacy
In Case You're Looking for a Good Read!
My New Year's Resolutions!
Daily Gratitude 😍
My goal is to start every day in 2023 with three things I'm grateful for!
At least once every week, I will schedule a time to read with students.
Break the Habit 😬
You read it here! I am vowing one phone free hour before I go to bed every day (two on weekends!)
Test Before You Return!
Once again WPS was able to send home COVID-19 test kits, free of charge, for use prior to returning to school and work on January 3, 2023. The tests were distributed to students and staff prior to vacation.
As you are probably aware, there is currently an increase in respiratory infections, including COVID-19, Influenza, RSV, and everyday coughs and colds. This means that we will experience students and co-workers who may be at school/work with mild symptoms. During the previous few school years, that was very rare and it will take some time to readjust to this reality. Many students and faculty are choosing to wear masks to mitigate the risk of catching or carrying illness. However, mask-wearing remains voluntary in the Watertown Public Schools at this time. Please be respectful of students and co-workers who may be well enough to attend school and work, yet may have mild respiratory symptoms. As always, if you have concerns about your own susceptibility to infection, you are encouraged to wear a mask.
In the Event of Inclement Weather (School Closures or Delays)
We live in New England, and whether we love them or hate them, snow days may be just around the corner. As such, please review the information contained in this section regarding school closure protocols. State law requires 180 days of instruction and also requires that any school closures (“snow days”) be made up before June 30. In the case of inclement weather or school closure for emergency reasons, information about school closures will be:
-Posted on the District’s website (www.watertown.k12.ma.us), the WPS Facebook page (@watertownpublicschools) and the WPS Twitter feed (@watertownschool)
-Emailed to parents and staff from the Superintendent’s office via the District’s messaging service
-Broadcast to the following stations
- WCVB Television (Channel 5)
- WHDH Television (Channel 7)
- NBC Boston (Channel 10 and NECN)
- WFXT Television (Channel 25)
- WBZ Television (Channel 4)
- WBZ Radio (AM 1030)
Some television stations provide a free text alert service notifying of closures and delays (e.g., www.fox25boston.com/weather/closing-login). We will post on the above locations as soon as the decision is made.

ELPAC
ELPAC is the English Learner Parent Advisory Council and if your student is currently in the ESL program or used to be in the ESL program we'd love to get your ideas! We met on Friday 11/8 and the group had questions about school food and nutrition. Please complete the survey so we can decide on a regular meeting day. We will ask the Director of School Nutrition, Brandon Rabbitt, to come to our next meeting.
