Dear Parker Middle School Families,
As I write this letter, Parker Family Fun Night has yet to begin, but I’m looking forward to seeing our students and families at this event sponsored by the PTO. I was encouraging many students to attend during all lunches today and they seemed excited with the thoughts of cotton candy!
Thanks to a grant from the Reading Educational Foundation, Parker students were treated to the storyteller, Charlotte Blake Alston. We held our first all-school assembly and students and staff listened to stories and songs in the oral tradition. See below for some photos of the event. We will continue the conversation in advisory on why it’s important to listen to the stories of others.
As you may know, the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) publicly released spring 2022 MCAS results this past week. More information can be found by visiting DESE’s website and clicking on the “Assessment” tab. Parents/guardians of students who participated in spring 2022 MCAS will receive their individual student results the week of October 10th. Additionally, I will be sharing information about our school’s results with families on October 11 at our PTO meeting. At the October 6th school committee meeting, the central office team will present an overview of the spring 2022 MCAS results. While we use a variety of assessments to monitor student learning, MCAS helps us monitor broad systems and identify areas needing further investigation and attention. As such, data will be reviewed and analyzed with our staff to support our school improvement efforts. As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions.
I had a great time working with students during the first Principal's Student Council meeting. We will meet again after school on Wednesday, Oct. 12 where we plan to start planning the first spirit week of the year.
Are you new to Reading? Don’t miss the new resident open house happening on Oct. 18 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Download the flier for more information.
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Rochelle

Kindness Kits
The Pine Street Inn in Boston’s South End neighborhood serves more than 1,900 individuals daily and assists homeless individuals in areas including street outreach, prepared meals, housing, medical care, and job training. Once again, we at Parker are gathering items for the residents at the Pine Street Inn by creating “Kindness Kits” that include donations from all of you to individuals in need. On the morning of October 6, our eighth graders will pack the goods with the donations that have been collected during our drive here at school.
We can’t thank you enough for your donations and support. We will continue to collect until October 5.
Please make sure items are travel sized or small. Items Include:
6th Grade Teams: Health related donations including band aids, first aid kits, sunscreen, wet wipes/tissue packs, deodorant, chapstick, disposable razors, shaving cream, baby powder
7th Grade Teams: Personal hygiene items including toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, shampoo and conditioner, body wash, body lotion, combs and brushes, washcloths
8th Grade Teams: Adult socks, Feminine hygiene products, disposable ponchos, mini bottles of water, snacks including jerky, trail mix, granola bars
