Standardized testing

Hello Everyone!

I very much appreciate all the continued communication with us. It has been very good to speak with all of you on general questions and concerns. As we have stated in other conversations, we are going to be putting a great deal of energy into increasing the number of students who take this year's state standardized test. The state mandates a 95 percent test completion of our students. If you have questions about state standardized testing, please reach out and speak to us before any choices are made. We can only ask for that consideration by you and yours. We are always available to discuss those questions and concerns that you may have. Thank you for your time and consideration on this subject and I continue to look forward to future conversations. Have a great day. Thank you.

Message From the Dean of Students

AVID

Last month every student should have received an AVID binder. Students are learning how to use their binders and are becoming more organized. They are checked weekly by their first period teacher and if they meet the rubric required, they are given a CAT card to put in the box in the front office. Every two weeks on Friday, we draw ten names out of the box and those students earn breakfast burritos. The students love earning breakfast burritos and we are excited that students are working hard for them. In addition, they can also earn CAT cards for other positive things as well such as being kind, helping others, being a leader, etc.

Tardy Policy and Attendance

Last month we started our tardy policy and we are so proud of how much our students have improved with arriving to school and class on time. Before the policy started, we had a page and a half of students receiving tardies for arriving late to school alone; this did not count the tardies they get going from one class to another. Now, we have about half of one page daily, which is a significant improvement. Thank you both students and parents for putting forth the effort to arrive to school, and class, on time. We are so proud of all of you!

We do want to address attendance issues, however. Chronic absenteeism is considered below 90%. Looking at Boron High School's data, 59% of our students are considered chronically absent. This astounding percentage is something we really want to focus on now and in the future as attendance is directly related to student success. The best learning environment is in a classroom with a teacher present where students are able to not only present for the lesson, but are also able to receive help from the teacher when needed. The following article, 10 Facts About School Attendance, has some eye opening data on how attendance affects students' education (Be sure to read the "read more" links as well).

We hope we all can continue to work together not only on improving tardies, but attendance as well.

Thank you!

Preparing Our Children for Their Futures

It is never too early to start looking at the classes your child is taking and preparing them for their future. If your child plans on attending a 4 year college/university in California then there are some standards they must reach. A-G is what we call the pathway when we are setting up our high school classes. We are reaching that time of year when we will be registering for our Fall Classes for the 2023-2024 classes and it is something to consider.

I will be discussing all of these options with the students by class and will have flyers to send home around the end of March. We are hoping to add at least one new elective this year and pushing forward with our A.V.I.D. school approach. The end of the year will be here before we know it!

General Information for Everyone

After School Program

I wanted to alert you to some information that your student may not have shared with you or that you may not have heard about through any forms of communication. We now have an after school program that allows students to stay on campus from 3 PM - 4 PM and work on any assignments they need help with. A teacher is always present and transportation is provided for any student that chooses to stay (we do not need advance warning). This program runs Monday-Thursday every week unless otherwise stated. It is a great time for any students who need to make up homework, get some added support, or just have a quiet place to work.

Student and Parent Resources and Supports

Boron Jr./Sr. High School Tardy Policy

Below you will find the Boron Jr./Sr. High School Tardy Policy. Please help us to keep improving the number of tardies we have each day by talking to your child about arriving to school on time and going from one class to another in a timely matter. Every minute a student is out of class, they lose instruction time that they don't get back.

Boron Jr./Sr. High School Student Attendance Calendar

Attendance is a vital part of your child's success in education. Student success begins in the classroom and in order to be successful, each student needs to attend school regularly and on time. Please take a look at the student attendance calendar below and plan vacations and other activities around school if at all possible.

Boron Jr./Sr. High School Bell Schedule

Below you will find the bell schedule. Please reinterate to your child the importance of being on time to class because often the best instruction is done at the beginning of each class period. It is important that you know your child's schedule so that if taking them out of school early is unavoidable, you can try to avoid taking them out of their core classes.
