Principal's Message
Dear Falcon Families,
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday weekend. This is a short but mighty month where we will cover Habit #5, Think Win-Win with our student leaders! Did you know it only takes one person to Think Win-Win, and by modeling this attitude, sustainable solutions are more likely to be considered and achieved? This Habit is all about the mentality of respecting others and respecting yourself. It's finding a way to have courage and consideration in your interactions with others. A great aspect of the 7 Habits is that they apply to all areas of life- home, work, at the grocery store, in the community, and at school!
A Lose/Lose mentality is the attitude that "If I can't get my way, neither can you." which is low consideration for others and low consideration for yourself.
A Lose/Win mentality is "Go Along to Get Along" which is always giving into others. Yes, there is high consideration for the other person but in the end, if it's a one-sided agreement, it really isn't a Win after all.
A Win/Lose mentality is "My way or the highway." This is the type of situation where someone may only be getting their way out of demands, aggression, or creating a fearful atmosphere, which may work in the short-term but never pans out in the long run.
Thinking Win-Win means that you go into problem-solving mode (not attack or avoidance mode) when a stressor comes up with another person. When in conflict, be sure to balance the courage for getting what you want with the consideration for what others want. Even if you are interacting with another person who is not thinking win-win, but maintaining a win-win attitude, you are more likely to come up with sustainable solutions if you believe we can all win. The next time you run into a disagreement, consider starting your sentence with "In thinking win-win..." before you share how a solution may benefit both sides. It may go further toward a solution than you think! During this stressful month, reflect on opportunities to seek mutual benefit in your interactions as a way to model win-win for your family.
Be sure to ask your children what Think Win-Win means, and how it can apply to them when they have a conflict. Instead of solving the next argument between two siblings/friends if they bring you a conflict to referee, consider asking them "what is a win-win solution to this problem?" to encourage them to become problem-solvers together, which will empower them to reach their own solutions.
Sincerely,
Beth Mildren
