St Jerome's Newsletter
Week 8, Term 1 (Thursday 28 March 2019)
Dear Parents and members of our school community
Lenten Prayer
Lord, teach me to give generously to others, something of myself.
Teach me to listen with my heart and ears to words unspoken.
Teach me to be gentle, as you are.
Help me to appreciate all that you have given me.
Remind me to slow down and look around at all that you have done.
Teach me to be more like you.
Amen
12 Ways to Celebrate Lent
Lent gives us 40 days to reflect on Jesus Christ and on our own spirituality. Here are 12 more suggestions.
· Say grace before eating meals.
· Prepare meals for a shelter.
· Donate clothes and toys to charity.
· Pray for someone you do not know.
· Smile more often.
· Try to stop complaining and being critical of others.
· Plan a garden to learn how to nourish living things.
· Call a friend or relative you lost touch with.
· Take someone to Mass with you.
· Help someone with their projects or tasks.
· Volunteer your time.
· Be a happy and positive person.
The Virtue of Service
Service is giving to others, making a difference in their lives. You consider their needs as important as your own. To be of service is to be helpful without waiting to be asked and doing every job with excellence. When you act with a spirit of service, you can change the world.

Lent Week 4 Project compassion Story
Michaela from Alice Springs, Australia
Twenty-one year-old Michaela is helping to build a social enterprise for people with chronic illnesses at The Purple House in Alice Springs. Featured in Project Compassion 2014, the First Australian-run Wellbeing Program, uses its profits to connect and care for dialysis patients who are far from home.
As a Purple House trainee, Michaela completed a Certificate IV in business management. She was also recently promoted from administration trainee to permanent employee, working on The Wellbeing Program.
The young Alywarr woman cares for patients as they receive dialysis and helps them to feel at home and remain hopeful during treatment. Patients in turn pass on traditional knowledge to Michaela.
The program is run by the Western Desert Nganampa Walytja Palyantjaku Tjutaku Aboriginal Corporation, with support from Caritas Australia.
First Australians are twice as likely to experience chronic kidney disease, and four times more likely to die from it than other Australians*.
With the help of staff like Michaela, the Aboriginal-controlled service gives patients the opportunity to stay connected with their culture. They do this through traditional healing practices and income-generating activities, such as making bush balms and soaps.
Profits are invested back into supporting patients receiving remote care and help to get people on dialysis back on country.
In addition to completing her studies, Michaela has obtained a driver’s licence, is building her leadership skills running workshops solo.
“Hope means having something to look forward to. I enjoy building relationships with the patients and learning from them. If we keep our culture alive we can feel strong.
Student Councillors’ Book Sale for Caritas and Project Compassion
Our student Councillors have been working hard to collect books to sell to raise money for Project Compassion. There are still books and Ipad covers available to purchase on Friday and students are encouraged to bring along some money to support this worthy cause.

Paint Me A Rainbow Autism Awareness Day
It was lovely to see our students joining in the spirit of Autism Awareness Day yesterday as they dressed in vibrant colours of the rainbow and joined in the activities with enthusiasm.
A special thanks to our teachers who highlighted the theme creatively. Students in Digital Technology enjoyed creating autism awareness songs using the Garage Band app and each class shared stories and information in various formats. This helped to promote awareness and understanding of autism. Today provided a rich opportunity for us to celebrate the uniqueness of each person here at St Jerome’s.
Autism can make amazing things happen!
