THE VIKING
Hinesburg Community School - March 27, 2020
The Principal's Corner
Dear HCS Families:
As you have all heard, Governor Scott made the tough decision to order our public schools to close for the rest of the school year. This was a decision we were anticipating as being very possible, which is one reason we have taken our move to distance learning so seriously. Over the past week and a half, our staff has worked hard to decide on digital platforms to use for remote learning, and then to make decisions around what we should be providing in the way of activities and lessons for kids, and finally, how we should best transition over time from providing review material into providing new learning remotely for our students.
Teaching our children from a distance is nothing any of us have ever done before, so just like when our students are trying something new, there will be mistakes and problems to overcome, however, just as it happens daily in our classrooms, we will learn from our mistakes and successes and we will become more and more successful at meeting our kids' needs. The same can probably be said for how many of you are figuring out the logistics of having your kids learn at home. Clearly, everyone understands the difficulty in what staff, students and families are trying to do and so far, it seems that patience and understanding on everyone's part have been the norm. The kids, staff, and parents have been pretty amazing! Thank you.
At the same time as working through this new way of life, many of you are facing new challenges yourselves. Some of you are out of work, others are learning to work from home, and all of you are trying to support your kid's learning while doing your best to calm their fears. Just know that we are here to support your kids by providing connection and learning.
As we embark on this journey, please do not allow the work we are asking kids to complete create major stress for you or your family. If you feel overwhelmed or have suggestions, do not hesitate to reach out to your child's teachers to raise any concerns you might have. We all want to do what is best for your kids and we are working hard to make it happen.
Although none of us have experienced a time like this before, the Hinesburg Community School family of students, parents, staff, and volunteers are rising to the occasion. Thank you for your kindness and support, and beyond HCS, we especially want thank our health care professionals, truck drivers, food service staff, grocery store employees, first responders and all other people that are keeping Vermont on track.
Warmly,
Suzan and John

A Letter From School Counselors, Vickie Nelson & David Rast
Dear HCS students and families,
As we move in the next few weeks and are all learning to develop new routines, one of the most important things we do not want to change is our relationships with students and families. While we will not be seeing each other in person, please know we are here to continue to support you and your children socially, emotionally and academically.
We will be available by email during school hours and plan to develop a schedule to be able to meet one-on-one with anyone who may need additional support via a virtual meeting.
These are uncharted waters for all of us and we are a strong community. We will get through this together with consistent communication and patience with one another as we adapt to a new way of being, working and living.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to us with any questions or concerns. We will be checking in with students and families and we are also able to connect you with resources.
Here is a brief article to help you start to think about creating routines at home and also about finding the silver lining in this new way of life. You can also find resources and activities on our HCS School Counseling website. And remember, just as Fred Rogers said, “look for the helpers.”
With deep gratitude,
Vicki Nelson and David Rast
