Kindergarten
Resources for Block 2
Overview
Operations and Algebraic Thinking are covered heavily in Unit 3. Kindergartners that can master teen numbers as ones and tens are well-equipped to handle first grade. Representing, relating, and operating on whole numbers, initially within sets is a critical area that supports future learning.
Understanding common errors (see below, TE p.327) students might encounter at the end of the Unit can help ensure good instruction that addresses these errors throughout the work.
CC and OA Standards
Great Resources
- Unit 2 Comparing Numbers of the Georgia State Math Tasks are related to Counting and Cardinality with the NBT.1 and MD.3 standards that Expressions also adds.
- Unit 5 Investigating Addition and Subtraction of the Georgia State Math Tasks are entirely Operations and Algebraic Thinking.
- Check out Utah Teacher Created Resources and Tasks divided up by standard.
- Engage NY Module 5 Numbers 10-20 and Counting to 100 are useful for this point in the year. Topic A, Lesson 2 is specifically about teaching tens and ones. This Module is also suggested for Block 5 teaching at the end of the year.
- Learn Zillion has many lessons with short videos to enhance your teaching. They include additional materials and links to other games and activities, so be sure to check the "Additional Materials" tab. The Counting by Tens and Ones Unit might be especially helpful.
Acting Out Subtraction
Keep working on those subtraction skills from Unit 2 with a fun game. Students will use props or items to act out subtraction story problems - a great activity for indoor recess or an odd 5-minutes on a Friday!

Fun Games
ABCya might have other "just games" but their math tools are pretty handy. Base Ten Fun is great for building bigger numbers as you work toward 100. Marble Math has a drag and drop to help with addition. Numerical Order can help those still working on ordering numbers.
