"A School of Excellence"

Principal's Message

We had another great week in the Land of the Tigers! Second semester is in full swing and promises to be productive, challenging, and exciting as we continue making further headway towards attaining our mission and vision. This past Friday, we set the stage as we met in PLC groups to discuss our vision towards our Instructional Rounds Initiative at SMS. This week, students will take Student Growth Exams. I am looking forward to analyzing the data so that I can see how much our students have grown as well pinpointing specific areas to address for improvement.

It is important that we continue to hold students accountable for their academic performance. We must challenge and elevate their mental workflow beyond Rote Learning. We must be reminded that is it up to us to equip our students with 21st century skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, technology, and communication.

Our Academic Challenge Team is off to a great start this year with a win this past Thursday. Along with this achievement, our Beta Club brought home a plaque for membership increase from the 3- Day Convention experience.

We will continue with our School-Wide Reading during daily Advisory classes. Teachers, you are encouraged to ensure that students are reading books and going to the library to take AR tests.

We will have our 2nd Quarter Academic Awards Program this Friday morning at 10:00am in the Tiger Gym.

Have a wonderful week!

Kate at Wake!

Congratulations to Kate Boan! As you know, Kate is a Behavior Manager at SMS. Kate has enrolled in Graduate School at Wake Forest University. Kate started her first round of online classes this semester. She is working on her Masters in Counseling. Go Kate! We are proud of you!

Meteorology 101 at Spaulding Middle

Coach Cummings' 6th grade Science students received a visit this past week from WBTW's Kara James for a Meteorology 101 lesson; but not before they showed off their "Tiger Skills." The students did a "Weather Rap" for Ms. James, written by 6th grader, Jonathan Jordan and responded correctly to a few of her weather related questions that she threw at them before getting started with her presentation.

Welcome Ms. Heigler!

Please welcome Ms. Heigler as she joins our staff. Ms. Heigler has served as a substitute custodian since May and has accepted an offer to be a full time custodian at SMS.

Safety Drills

Thanks to everyone for a very successful Fire and Intruder Drill this past week. We will continue to have drills this school year. Drills are important steps in keeping our school safe and secure. When we regularly practice the plan, it makes us more confident in making decisions to effectively and efficiently manage emergencies.
