Mrs. Wilson's Language Arts Class
November 10-14
This Week
Also with feedback from the first surveys, I have started a little friendly competition between my classes. Students have asked for a little motivation to read so we will be keeping track of the number of books each class has read. The class with the most books read will get some sort of incentive at semester. If you have any suggestions as to what the incentive could be, please let me know. I'm looking for something that will motivate but not break the bank. These are the standings as of Wednesday:
1st Hour- 177 books
2nd Hour- 123 books
3rd Hour- 110 books
6th Hour- 176 books
Please encourage your child to read more at home to help out his/her class (and themselves).
I handed out the guidelines to the science fiction/fantasy book project. Students will be picking quotes out of their book to show me the story elements. I will go through examples of what this should look like step by step in class using our class read aloud book. This project will be due on December 5.

Studies Show (Part 2)
1. Establish a daily family routine.
Examples: Providing time and a quiet place to
study, assigning responsibility for household
chores, being firm about bedtime and having
dinner together.
2. Monitor out-of-school activities.
Examples: Setting limits on TV watching,
checking up on children when parents are not
home, arranging for after-school activities
and supervised care.
3. Model the value of learning, self-discipline,
and hard work. Examples: Communicating
through questioning and conversation,
demonstrating that achievement comes from
working hard.
4. Express high but realistic expectations for
achievement. Examples: Setting goals and
standards that are appropriate for children's
age and maturity, recognizing and
encouraging special talents, informing friends
and family about successes.
5. Encourage children's development/
progress in school. Examples: Maintaining
a warm and supportive home, showing
interest in children's progress at school,
helping with homework, discussing the value
of a good education and possible career
options, staying in touch with teachers and
school staff.
6. Encourage reading, writing, and
discussions among family members.
Examples: Reading, listening to children read
and talking about what is being read.
