ENCORE Information
Science-
Kindergarten students have learned what science is all about! We made observations and studied our school garden. We continue to use nature to understand the world around us. We learned about the parts of a tree and build a tree using the engineering design process. We are focusing on our five senses and apples reviewing the parts of a tree and adding seasons!
First graders are learning about properties and observations through learning about rocks! They come in all different shapes, sizes, textures and colors. We helped the three bears solve a problem by separating out Papa Bear’s pebbles, Mama Bear’s gravel, and Baby Bear’s sand. We are heading to the beach to learn about how sand is made! We will be observing different types of sand as we travel around the country to different beaches!
Second graders are learning how to use their observation skills by playing a game, “Don’t Let the Cat Out of the Bag”. We are learning about air by predicting and conducting experiments to test different objects and how air moves things, air takes up space, and air interacts with other objects. Air is a gas that is invisible so we are testing how to prove it is there by experimenting with water and vials. We created wind vanes and anemometers and conducted experiments that meteorologists would do to test the wind. We even huffed and puffed to try to blow our homemade houses down!
Third graders started off the year learning about the metric system and how to use scales, tape measures, rulers, graduated cylinders, and syringes. We did this through our metric olympics as well as going to the beach to help a little old lady who swallowed a shell. WE are learning about Earth Materials through observations of rocks and conducting experiments with mock and real rocks. We are learning about crystals and identification of ingredients in rocks. We are real rock stars!
Fourth graders are learning all about the solar system and the patterns that we are part of. We have learned about the 8 planets and their characteristics and why Earth is just right for life. We have learned about the pattern of the seasons and how shadows help us understand where the sun is in the sky during the course of the year. We created a sundial to tell the time during a sunny day, and experimented with how shadows change over time. Ask them about why “there’s no place like gnome”. We will be traveling to the planetarium on October 1st and connecting new patterns such as the moon, a year, and day and night.
Fifth graders are focused on learning about the human body! We are first learning about the skeletal system as they perform surgery on “patients” to determine how many bones we have in the human body...ask them to see if they can tell you! We are learning how to read X-rays and determining the different bones by their size and placement. We are learning through activities how tendons, ligaments, and muscles work to help us in movement. We are playing the Game of Bones to work as a team to solve different challenges.

Celebrating Culture
Christopher Columbus is sometimes credited with "discovering" America. Of course there were already people living in the Americas for thousands of years. Today we call them Native Americans. Columbus wasn't even the first European to reach the Americas as Leif Ericsson of the Vikings had already visited.
However, it was Columbus' journey and discovery that led to the European colonization of the Americas. The Portuguese, Spanish, French, English, and Dutch all sent more explorers and settlers following Columbus' return telling about the riches of this new land.
Columbus first landed in the Americas on October 12, 1492 and the anniversary of the day has been celebrated in the new world ever since. The 300 and 400 year anniversaries in 1792 and 1892 were big events in the United States, but it wasn't until 1937 that the day was made an official federal holiday. Originally the holiday was on October 12, but was changed to the second Monday of October in 1971.
Fun Facts About Columbus Day
- One of Columbus' ships, the Santa Maria, wrecked on the coast of the Americas and did not make the return voyage.
- The day is called Dia de la Hispanidad or Fiesta National in Spain.
- The first state to officially recognize the day as a holiday was Colorado in 1906.
- It is the least observed of all federal holidays with only around 10% of businesses closing and taking the day off.
