Sunday Night Programming: Give One Get One

PLAN NOW for Sunday, July 16 to participate in our first annual MAEN "Give One, Get One" Best Practices Roundtable. (Think of speed dating format. You will move from table to table based on a time limit to share YOUR best practices with each other!)

We are asking ALL attendees to BRING at least ONE lesson plan, idea, website, resource, etc. that you can share to help encourage and enlighten others in our organization. We are excited for all the fantastic ideas everyone around the state of Missouri will bring to share!

We would also love to post these Best Practice ideas on a link on our MAEN website! Please email your Best Practice links that you would like to have included on our conference webpage to: vnelson@shr2.k12.mo.us

Give One Get One will start at 4 pm Sunday the 16th.

Taking It to the Streets

In 2021, the MAEN Conference theme was "If not now, then when and If not us, then who?

In 2022, the MAEN Conference theme was "The time is now. Pursue your inner greatness."

Now in 2023, we realize that it is us and the time is now to take it to the streets. We are the ones who directly work with students to create positive change with our students. Mr. Flowers and his story provide the framework, incentive, and guidance to help us create positive change in youth. Please join us in this difficult, but rewarding work. Hope to see you this summer!

Keynote Speaker: Tyrone Flowers

Flowers was born to teenage parents who could not raise him. He spent his childhood being shuffled between foster homes, detention centers, reform schools, and state youth facilities. Labeled "beyond parental control" at age seven, he was also diagnosed with behavior problems and learning disorders. Service providers saw no hope for his future.

Determined to prove wrong all of the adults who had no hope for his future, Flowers resumed high school. He gained popularity on the basketball team, had completed graduation requirements, and had received offers to play basketball in college; however, just two weeks before graduation, Flowers was shot three times by a basketball teammate. The shooting left him in a wheelchair and, faced with decisions about his future with limited use of his body, he chose to use his mind. A diploma from Penn Valley Community College in hand, he graduated next from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a bachelor's degree in sociology and a minor in psychology with academic honors. In 1998, Flowers went on to receive a Juris Doctorate from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law, where he received the CALI Excellence for the Future Award for his work in 'Children & the Law.' Flowers was the first person in his family to obtain a college degree.
