MHS Seniors Visit OSU

A group of MHS Seniors, accompanied by Mrs. Leslie Sexson and Mrs. Pam Chaney, attended OSU Close Up on Monday, Oct. 24.

The students were able to attend breakout sessions, learn about the different schools on campus, attend informational sessions, a college fair, and see residential life in person.

The group also visited Eskimo Joe's for two can't miss OSU traditions - cheese fries and milkshakes. During the day they also chatted with Sara Acupan, a Wardog Alum attending OSU, and Jonas Chaney, a Ridgerunner Alum and Mrs. Chaney's son, about student life on campus and more.

The seniors included: Karina Abell, Jeriah Brewster, Michael Bunch, Kaleena Burtrum, Hayden Fields, Jayden Kennedy, Hanna Kinney, Maddison Matthews, Kiah Payton, Laue Riley, Lexi Santiago, Sydney Shelton and Lindsey Smith.

Meet Mrs. Leslie Sexson

They say you can’t return home, but Mrs. Leslie Sexon did just that, when she returned this year to become the new MJHS/MHS College and Career Coordinator.

Leslie, who has served 38 years in education, was a Wardog from 2012 to 2016, said she came back because of a love for the people in the community.

“Every day is a new day,” Mrs. Sexson said. “I get to meet awesome kids each and every day, and work with great people.”

Leslie entered education for a variety of reasons. She stayed in the career field because she discovered education is the key to a successful and happy life.

“I absolutely love helping others discover their passions,” Mrs. Sexson said.

Leslie and her husband have three adult children. She’s also “Nonna” to five grandchildren.

One Thing With Mrs. Leslie Sexson

One person you admire

My father. He was a humble man with not many wants for himself. He raised five girls and survived. He taught me to love family and accept all people for who they were - and we were all God’s children. I think of him every day and I can still see the support and respect in his eyes.

One book that’s stuck with you

Hope Rising - This book explains how the Science of Hope can change your life. Everyone deserves a change to make changes- if they want.

One thing that might surprise people

My two grandkids, Reese age 8 and Kallie age 6, teach me new stretches and exercises almost every week. They are great teachers!

One thing you can’t live without

Morning coffee!

One piece of advice you’ve been given

Never give up. That is the easy way out. Find a way.

One thing you’d want students to know

I am here for you. You have talents, and I will work to help you discover those talents. You are going to make a difference in this world.

PSU Scholarship for Class of 2022

Earlier this semester, Mrs. Leslie Sexson, our new College & Career Coordinator, attended a luncheon at Pittsburg State University, giving high school counselors information about the four-year school in southeast Kansas.

During the event, several scholarships were awarded. MHS won the "grand prize" earning $5,000 in scholarship monies for the Class of 2022.

Students interested in attending PSU next year, should contact Mrs. Sexson to apply for this scholarship - which is a one-time financial award for MHS students.

"$5,000 is a great start to help pay for college," Mrs. Sexson said. "This is a good school, with lots of different programs and lots of different activities."

Mrs. Sexson said she's on the hunt for more scholarships for this year's senior class.

Veterans Day 2021

Members of MHS's National Honor Society will host the annual Veterans Day program beginning at 10 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 11, in the MAC. A meal for the veterans will take place following the program.

This year's program is open to all area veterans and their families. It includes performances by the MHS Choir and Band students, as well as patriotic / inspirational readings presented by Wardog students.

In an effort to recognize veterans with Wardog connections (alumni or family of current faculty, staff or students), Mrs. Emilee Gardner and Mr. Richard Patterson are collecting photos for a slideshow presentation. Photos, along with the veteran's name, rank and branch of service, may be emailed to egardner@miamips.net or rpatterson@miamips.net by Wednesday, Nov. 3.
