A letter from Dr. Manno, re: PASC Poster Presentation
Dear PASC Staff and Administration:
Wow, Wow, and Wow!
This was my first PASC Poster Content. Please accept my most sincere commendations for your outstanding work. The event is a high quality academic symposium on your action research to improve behavior for your students. As a doctoral education instructor, I am confident in stating that the nature of your research – cited literature, design, process, data collection, and conclusions – is of the highest quality. I was most impressed with the passion and clear commitment to improve the quality of life for our students and their families exhibited by our staff members as they so articulately presented their work.
Thank you for the outstanding work with this event, and the work you do each and every day with the students. What an enjoyable evening.
Sincerely,
Dr. Christopher M. Manno

Read Across America at BCSSSD!
Special guests, local dignitaries, and our school community celebrated "Making Books Come Alive Through Your Senses".
Congratulations on a worthwhile, engaging, and educational interactive event.
Occupational Therapy at BCSSSD
As part of the Occupational Therapy Department’s Professional Development Plan goal to promote collaboration among all campuses, the OT Department hosted a Literacy Open House on Friday, April 24th. Classrooms from the Elementary campus joined students from PASC and student helpers from High School to experience a multi-sensory approach to “Bring Books to Life” in conjunction with our traditional Read Across America celebration.
This included inviting school and community members to read in classrooms also on April 24th. Eight readers volunteered their time to share stories with our students. Our BCSSEA Pride group donated books and provided all of the supplies for both events to support our school community. Parents were invited to join their child and participate in our celebration. They were provided a handout and skills were demonstrated to encourage carryover in promoting a multi-sensory approach to learning at home.
Members from the OT department selected two books to provide an interactive experience. Pete the Cat: Too Cool for School focused on the importance of being yourself. Students participated in activities to work on functional dressing, visual motor skills, coordination, social skills and self-esteem by dressing for a photo booth, selecting clothing for a Pete the Cat figure and completing a Pete the Cat puzzle. The Very Lonely Firefly focused on staying connected with others. Students took an interactive sensory journey through the story as it was read. Items from the story were recreated for the students to enhance the story experience. They participated in various tactile boxes to find fireflies, assembled fireflies in a fine motor activity to follow directions, used multi-level switches for cause and effect practice when activating lights on switches or finger isolation to activate fireworks on iPads and finally searched for glowing fireflies in the dark tunnel. Activities were provided for all ability levels and members of the OT department collaborated to create the overall experience.
April was Occupational Therapy month and this was the perfect activity to promote and share how Occupational Therapy is valuable to our students! Occupational therapists typically use a multi-sensory approach in treatment sessions to encourage learning and skill development for school success. This was the first year the OT department participated in a large Read Across America program and we hope to continue this in upcoming years as we have received a very positive response from the students, school staff, administration and families who participated!

High School Culinary Classes took a Field Trip to Fernbrook Farms Education Center located in Chesterfield.
Students tasted organic crops, participated in an interactive activity about soil and how the soil is created through composting. They enjoyed an educational tractor pull wagon ride, learning the farm's history and the history of farming in general. Students loved the Animal Barn where they were able to feed and hold animals. Students learned what it takes to care for the animals and what products (culinary) we get from them.
Thank you to the Hamilton Ballet Theater dancers who so graciously performed for our students
