September 2019

Welcome!
Happy Reading,
Kelly Hincks
Hello! My name is Abby Symanow and I will be working with the preschool and junior kindergarten students this year in the library. I studied Elementary Education at Michigan State University, where I graduated with my Bachelor's Degree in May 2014. I then received my Master's Degree in Educational Technology from MSU while studying in Galway, Ireland. Before joining Kelly in the library this year, I was a classroom teacher for 2nd grade and PK4. I will also be teaching 2nd-grade math and 4th grade reading this year. If you have any questions or concerns please let me know! My email address is asymanow@dcds.edu.
Yours truly,
Abby Symanow
Volunteers Needed The only way we can meet the needs of all the students and faculty at the Lower School is with the help of volunteers. Volunteers will help to shelve books, catalog new titles, and other special projects. You can help as much or as little as you would like. We need support at all three campuses to start the year. If you are interested in volunteering send us an email to let us know! | No Extended Library Hours this Fall Since we are three Lower School locations this fall there will not be any scheduled Extended Library Hours. We will pick back up during the winter and spring PM Enrichment sessions once we move into the new space. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. | Visit Us on Canvas You can access many of the library resources on the Lower School Library Canvas page. If you have a question about your child's library day, want to know more about the library curriculum, need to access the library catalog, or want to check out an eBook you can visit our Canvas page to learn more. |

My Child's Library Book

When returning a book students in preschool and JK can place it in the designated spot in their classroom. In kindergarten through second-grade, students can return it to their classroom bin or to the book drop outside the library. In third and fourth grade, students can turn it into the library book drop across from the office.
Books are due each week on your child's library check out day. Children are welcome to return a book sooner if they are finished with it. They can also ask for it to be renewed if they would like to keep it for another week. Below is a list of each classroom's library check out day.

Library Resources You Can Use at Home
There are many resources that families can access at home that are provided by the DCDS Library Department. Here are just a few below!
PebbleGo This resource is designed for elementary students. This database is used often at school to support the curriculum but also can be used at home. It includes five databases about animals, science, biographies, social studies, and dinosaurs. You can read factual articles that can be used on any device with internet access. Please visit www.pebblgo.com. The username is yellowdcds and the password is jackets. | Libraries on Pinterest The DCDS Libraries can be found on Pinterest. Visit www.pinterest.com/dcdslibraries/ to see reading recommendations for the entire family. | Overdrive eBooks You can find the DCDS e-book library at http://dcds.lib.overdrive.com or through the link on the Lower School Library website at http://destiny.dcds.edu. You will need to login to your child's account to check out books. Their username will be their students account number. Their password is the capitalized first initial of the first and last name, their 2-digit birth month, and 4 digit birth year. For example: AB082012. |
