Message from Mrs. Stauffer
Dear Rainbow Families,
January 27th is a Rainbow PBIS Spirit Day. Our theme is Dress to Impress by wearing the clothes that make you feel best!
This week our staff will be meeting individually with each student to complete a brief assessment as a progress check on students’ reading skills by administering the Acadience Universal Screener. Much like measuring a child's height and weight, this assessment provides an indicator of a child's overall growth in reading. The purpose of this assessment is to obtain baseline data on the strengths and weaknesses of individual students in reading and to guide the teacher's classroom instruction.
Acadience Reading tests skills that are necessary for learning to read. Children who learn these skills become good readers. The skills are:
• Phonemic Awareness: Hearing and using sounds in spoken words
• Phonics: Knowing the sounds of the letters and sounding out written words
• Accurate and Fluent Reading: Reading stories and other materials easily and quickly with few mistakes
• Reading Comprehension: Understanding what is read
Acadience Reading is made up of six short individual tests. Because each test focuses on a different reading skill, your child may be given two to four Acadience Reading tests depending on his or her grade level. Each test takes approximately 1 minute because the tests are used only as indicators. Much like using a thermometer to take a child’s temperature is an indicator of overall health, each test is an indicator of how well a child is doing in learning a particular early reading skill. The scores tell us whether a child is likely to be “on track” for learning to read or whether a child may need some help in learning important reading skills. Your child’s teacher will use the information to better help your child. For example, Acadience Reading test results may tell us that we need to spend more time teaching your child how to “sound out” unknown words.
Acadience Reading is used to identify children who may need extra help to become good readers and to check up on those children while they receive the extra help to make sure they are making progress. Acadience Reading also may be used to make decisions about how well our school’s overall reading program is working for all children. Acadience Reading will not be used to grade your child. We are working hard at school to make sure that every child is on target for success, and we thank you for your efforts at home. Together, we will help your child become a successful reader.
Respectfully,
Mrs. Stauffer

Message from the School Nurse
Free Cavity Prevention Dental Care!
Did you know that physical and dental visits are important to maintaining your child’s health? The Pennsylvania School Code mandates dental exams in kindergarten, 3 and 7th grades. The School Nurse must maintain and follow up these missing exams. If you have not submitted a dental form for your child, please consider making an appointment with ChesPenn Health Service. They are offering a clinic February 25 and March 11, 9-1pm. Contact ChesPenn directly at 610-383-3888. This program is open to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 7th graders.
Is your child missing a physical? If you have not submitted a physical form from your doctor, a school exam can be performed by the School Nurse Practitioner with your written permission. Currently, only those students who have never submitted a physical form or in kindergarten/first who have not submitted a physical form are being considered. Please reach out directly to the school nurse to arrange.
All the best,
Maria Buhl, School Nurse

Important Reminders
Student Name/Teacher/Date and Time of Dismissal/Reason/Name of Adult picking up and relationship/Parent Signature and parent daytime phone#
All early dismissals should be completed at the main office by 3:00. Students must be signed out. Dismissals after 3:15 will be in the parent pickup line.
The adult picking up must bring a government issued Photo ID (preferably a driver’s license).
Refillable water bottles:Rainbow has transitioned to bottle filling stations. Water fountains have been turned off. Students should bring a refillable water bottle to school..
Transportation: A nationwide bus driver shortage is impacting many districts, including Coatesville, and may lead to increased delays. Buses normally run late the first two weeks of school as students and drivers become accustomed to their routes. We appreciate your patience. If your student is riding the bus, please have them at the bus stop 10 minutes prior to the arrival of the bus.
Parent-Pick-Up Notes: Thank you for having patience with us as we work to make our afternoon dismissal more efficient. Please help up with this by sending a parent pick up note into school with your student. You may send in a handwritten note or download and print the form below.
