Dear GRE Families,
We had our best turnout yet for this past week's PTO meeting. Thanks to those of you that were able to attend. At the meeting there was discussion from our Superintendent, Angie Hamburg about the upcoming Levy, an update about the process of forming a PTO at our new elementary school Prairie Run Elementary from Kim Castiglione and update sharing that GRE currently does not have any remaining executive members for next school year. Now is a great time to stay informed and get involved. If you would like to learn more about how to get involved in PTO, please reach out to one of our Co-Presidents Tara Shelby or Heather Setmire. You can connect with them on the GRE PTO Facebook page found here.
Don't forget Literacy/STEM Night is this Thursday, January 16th from 6-7. This is a great family friendly event to see how STEM and Literacy can connect to make the amazing creations. We hope to see you there!
Here's to a GREat week at GRE!

2. As a reminder, you must use the parent drop off loop when dropping your kids off in the morning or picking them up in the afternoon. This is for your child's safety and the safety of all of our students. We continue to see parents dropping off in the bus loop. Beginning this week, we will be blocking off this lot to help keep our students safe. If you have questions regarding pick up/drop off procedures, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me.
3. Be sure your children are coming to school on cold days with hats, gloves, and winter coats. We will take them out for recess as often as we are able. We value movement and fresh air and want all of our students to be able to play safely outside. If you or someone you know is struggling to provide the needed winter wear, please reach out to us. We are here to help!
4. Our next Big Walnut child check is coming up on Friday, March 6th. Child Check is an educational screening for children ages 3-5. This screening is provided by Big Walnut Local Schools and is free to families within the Big Walnut School District. The purpose is to provide parents with information regarding their child’s development in: Speech and Language Skills, Gross/Fine Motor (Large & Small Muscle) Skills, Basic Academic Concepts, Vision, and Hearing. Specials Spotlight: STEM with Mrs. Keller
This week Thursday is STEM & Literacy Night from 6-7! There will be hands-on activities for students to complete and prizes to win. If you have any recyclable items please feel free to bring them to STEM night and there will be bins to put them in. Some items we are always in need of are: paper towel tubes, empty, clean containers, egg cartons, and water bottles. Hope to see you there!
Fourth Grade is beginning passion projects. Students are currently thinking about things they care about and want to learn about. They will then choose one of their passions and turn it into a project. This is one of my favorite projects, as it is completely based on what the student wants to learn.
Students in third grade have completed their choice-based STEM project. They will be sharing their projects this week and then beginning passion projects.
Second Grade students are continuing to create and improve their carnival games. Carnival games will be available to play at STEM night. Students will then be exploring with Makey-Makey and robotics.
First Grade students will be starting to learn about different types of engineers this week. Students will be completing challenges that focus on the different types of engineers. Some of the challenges they will be working on are chemical engineer and they will design a new bubble solution, biological engineer and they will design a new sensory toy, and plastics engineer and they will try to encourage the community to use paper or reusable bags instead of plastic bags.
Kindergarten students have been challenged to design a new and improved sleigh for Santa.
Open STEM is a time when students can come in during their recess and either work on a project or use the Makerspace. This past week students were finishing creating ugly dolls and making their own scrunchies.
