Parent Conferences

Thank you to those of you who have already rescheduled your parent conference. Click here to book a conference if you have not already done so. If none of these times fit your schedule, please email me so we can find a convenient time, or we can schedule a phone conference. My planning period is 12:30 - 1:20 most days, so if that time works better for you, please email me and we can schedule a day.

Please note...

  • All buses are locked out at this time. If parents want a child to ride, they have to check with Chapin Transportation.
  • Our lunch schedule has changed. We now go to lunch from 11:07 - 11:32.
  • The Media Center will have a grade level Box Tops for Education contest Oct. 19-30. Please save your Box Top UPC’s to send in during that time. The Media Center receives 10 cents from each UPC. Last year we collected over $3,000.00 in UPC’s. For more information visit http://www.boxtops4education.com. What a wonderful way to recycle trash!

Language Arts

The spelling pattern this week is /qu/ as in quarter and quiet. Today we practiced listening to the sounds of /qu/, /squ/, /sc/ and /sk/.

We will begin to read fables and will discuss the moral, as well as the characters, setting, and plot. We are also asking questions before, during and after reading to deepen our understanding.

In writing, we are continuing to work on personal narratives and will focus on organization this week, as well as how to write a good lead in order to "hook" the reader.

Math

This week we will complete chapter 2 in my math, and will have a math test on Wednesday. A review sheet will come home on Tuesday night for the Chapter 2 test. There will also be an addition fact test on Thursday. Please continue to help your child practice their addition facts. If you would like to download flash cards to help your child practice addition facts, please click here.

Social Studies

We will complete our unit on communities this week. Your child will bring home a review sheet and their social studies notebook Tuesday. Please help them review this information throughout the week. They will have a test on communities this Friday. Please keep the notebook at home so you can review the information with them, and return it to school on Friday.

CoGAT Testing

  • CogAT testing will be given on October 27, 28 and 29. Testing will begin promptly at 8:00 each morning. Please make sure your child gets plenty of rest the night before and has a good breakfast. There will be no homework on the nights of CogAT testing. Please also make sure that your child arrives to school on time. If he or she is tardy, they will not be allowed into the classroom until testing is complete, and they will have to miss classroom time in order to make the test up at a later date. For more information about CogAT testing, click here.

Postcard Geography

We are interested in gathering interesting information about places all across America. One way to do this is to collect postcards from family, friends, work associates or anyone you know who lives outside South Carolina. We would like to ask everyone to spread the word to ask these people to send our class a postcard that tells something interesting about where they live or are traveling. I do want to stress that we want to learn something from the postcards that we receive. The students do not have to write the postcards or even know the people that they are coming from. Our goal would be to have cards from all fifty states by the end of the year. There is no limit or quota per student. We are working together as a team. I hope that we get some really interesting cards about places across our country. Our mailing address is: Mrs. Collins' Second Grade Class, LMES, 1531 Three Dog Road, Chapin, SC 29036. There is a map on our class website which I will keep updated so we will know how many more postcards are needed. Click here for the map.
