Physical Classroom Environment
Time for a Fresh Start!
Why is environment important?
Your environment reflects your beliefs and values about children and learning. These values in turn shape children's beliefs about themselves, learning, and life. The feel and physical space of your classroom has the ability to drive learning, empower students, and build community.
Take a look at the videos below to learn more about the "why" of environment.
Transforming Your Space
- No matter what classroom you have, you have the potential to turn that space into an environment that reflects what you value.
- The environment also has the power to shape your community's values. Children's beliefs about themselves and life can be shaped in your 4 walls.
- Start with a blank space. Be okay with an "unfinished" room. Let your space reflect your students.
- It's not about having new furniture, but it is about rethinking placement and design of what you have and getting rid of things that you don't need.
Room Arrangement
What is the purpose of each space? Is there a flow that allows for easy access and movement from space to space. Be sure to include:
- Whole Class Gathering Space
- Individual/small groups spaces
- Classroom Library
- Quiet/cozy spaces
- Writing materials space
- Math materials space
Materials
Children should feel empowered to use the materials or supplies that are out and at their level. We want to build children's independence and problem solving by giving them access to:
- Community Supplies
- Writing materials
- Math materials

Examples of Learning Spaces
Think about the arrangement and how the room flows. Is there room for movement, meeting spaces, quiet spaces? Do children feel empowered to get the supplies they need when they need them? Take a look at the pictures below and think about how you can create an environment that reflects your values and beliefs about children and learning.
