Active Vocabulary Practice

Anyone who has been part of a team understands the benefits of working together to achieve an objective. "A team becomes more than just a collection of people when a strong sense of mutual commitment creates synergy, thus generating performance greater than the sum of the performance of its individual members"

This is a good description of what happens when a group of students are engaged in learning and practicing vocabulary today. Acting as a team helps build classroom community and promotes positive academic risk taking. Students who are part of a vocabulary community get excited about words and want to make them their own. They help each other learn and cheer each other on. It becomes socially acceptable to achieve academic success.

In Word Nerds: Teaching all students to learn and love vocabulary, you can learn about the following activities to promote team building and learning vocabulary:

Counting Dude, Bragging Dude

Word Charades

Vocabulary Rap
