MEADOWLARK NEWSLETTER
APRIL 2019
Dear Families,
One of our Redesign Goals is to provide further opportunities for students to SHOWCASE their learning in a variety of ways. Sometimes, the showcasing can be as simple as a teacher hanging a finished product (writing sample, artwork etc) out in the hallway for our school community to view while other showcases can be more "formal" in nature such as students presenting about their learning in some way (sharing with their classmates, presenting to a small group, using social media to post learning etc). Thank you to all the families that came to support our Spring Showcase Night on Tuesday, March 19th. We had 80% of our students participate! Through surveying families, teachers, and students last fall, we have be working diligently on finding further opportunities for students to celebrate their learning publicly to others.
State Testing is in full swing for our third, fourth, and fifth grade students. These grade levels are taking assessments in English/Language Arts and Math. Fifth graders are taking an additional test in Science. All these scores should be ready for distribution to families prior to the end of the school year, if not by early summer. Our students have worked very hard this year and we know that they are going to do wonderfully!
Thank you for your support of Fitness for Funds, our annual PTO fundraiser. Donations are filtering in on a daily basis and we are excited to celebrate at the Fitness for Funds event at the district stadium on April 26th. We have not finalized when specific grade levels will be walking, but we will send this information out soon! We would love to have you join us!
As always, thank you for your support! Happy Spring!
Dana Matheny, Principal

Library News
The Meadowlark Book Fair was an awesome success thanks to the teachers, students, and parents of our school! We sold $4,926.00 worth of books and merchandise which allows our school to receive $1,231.00 cash profit! Additionally, we held two successful book fairs so Scholastic is awarding us multiple fair rewards of 15% of our total sales from Fall and Spring this year. That means we earned $764.00 in Scholastic dollars to spend on books and equipment for our library. We thank all the parents who volunteered and especially to Mrs. Collinsworth who decorated our fair, set up everything and packed it all away! Our teachers received over $115 in discounts on their purchases and we had several lucky winners throughout the book fair.
Our contest winners were:
Ryan R. won the $25 gift certificate for the Family Night raffle
Owen L. won the 3-5 Gumball Guessing Jar and a $10 gift certificate
Easton F. won the K-2 Peach ring Guessing jar and a $10 gift certificate
Caden R. won the inflatable shark
Sadie D. won the inflatable surfboard!
Mrs. Alfters won the $25 teacher gift certificate
Box Tops for Education
Clipping Box Tops is an easy way to help earn cash for our school. Each one is worth 10 cents for our school! Just look for the pink Box Top on tons of products. All you need to do is cut them out, glue or tape them to a collection sheet, and send them into school. Each month we will send home a new collection sheet. Be sure to send your sheet back to school by the end of the month, and, don’t worry, it’s okay if it isn’t full. We have a great trophy that the winning class each month will get to keep in their classroom. This year, our goal is to earn $1,000 for our school!
For more information on Box Tops, including a list of participating products, go to www.boxtops4education.com. Be sure to sign up as a member (it’s free) so you can check out our school’s earnings and get access to coupons and bonus offers. They also have an app that you can check out!
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We are here to help and would love to see this year be one of our best in Box Top earnings!

Our Kindness
On Friday, March 1st Meadowlark students had a Meadowlark service day. During the Meadowlark Service League all the students were divided into school family groups, each of which is made up of kids in all different grades. The groups were assigned to go to different rooms at certain times to make kindness items. These were things such as care packages for troops, dog/cat toys, or wreaths for nursing homes. Each teacher held a station where the kids had fun and did all sorts of kind things. There were many stations and all together Meadowlark students did amazing learning about and doing kind things.

Dental Health
Each February the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children's Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. Meadowlark Elementary students had the opportunity to participate in dental health screenings on Friday, March 22nd, with Dr. Aaron Huslig, D.D.S. This wonderful dentist/parent volunteered his time to provide his services for free to all Meadowlark students. Results from the screening will be sent home with your student, so be on the lookout for those.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Dr. Huslig and parent volunteer, Ashley Clark who helped to make this day run smoothly.
Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.
