Shapes in Our World
Collaborative Technology Project by Mrs. Casteel's Class
Solid Shape Scavenger Hunt
After learning about geometry and the attributes of solid shapes, we got a special assignment to use our classroom iPad to take pictures of solid shapes that we see every day at school. These are the shapes that we found.
Ice Cream Cone
This is a cone because it has one flat circle face at the top and one half circle wrapped around the bottom half that makes one vertex.

Globe
This is a sphere because it can roll and it has no edges, faces or vertices.
By: Chloe
Fish Food
This is a cylinder because it has a rolled up rectangle with two flat circle faces on each end.

Glue Stick
This is a cylinder because it has a flat circular face on the top and bottom. It has a rolled up rectangle on the side.

Dice
This is a cube because it has 8 square faces, 8 vertices, and 12 edges.

Basketball
This is a sphere because it has no angles, faces, edges, or vertices. It can roll like all spheres can.

Shape Winner: Rectangular Prism!
When we looked around, the shape that was most popular was the rectangular prism. We think that this is the most used shape because it easier to build things with rectangles than other shapes such as triangles. It is also easier to stack things on top of each other if they are shaped like rectangular prisms. We also think that it is easier to pack and store things that are rectangular prisms instead of cones, pyramids, cylinders, or spheres.
Projector
This is a rectangular prism because it has rectangular sides and it is a 3-D shape that can stand up.
By: Merritt
Laptop
This is a rectangular prism because it has rectangle shaped faces on all sides.
By: Skylar
Nook
This is a rectangular prism because it has the shape of a rectangle on each side of the nook and it has a height that makes it 3-D.

Fish Tank
This is a rectangular prism because it has 6 faces, 8 edges, and 12 vertices.

Defibrillator
This is a rectangular prism because it has rectangles on the sides even though it has a square face on the front and back.
By: Latracia
Books
This is a rectangular prism because it has a rectangle that is on the front, the back, and all the sides. It has a height too.

Tissue Box
This is a rectangular prism because it has rectangles on all sides. Even though it has an oval cut out of the top, the whole box is still a rectangular prism.
