District Staff News
May 15, 2020
The big news this week is that Governor Kate Brown has approved Phase I reopening plans for 31 Oregon counties. Clackamas County is not one of them. The county has not yet submitted an application to reopen. There is specific criteria each county must meet before applying. According to Pamplin Media:
"[Clackamas County] Commissioner Martha Schrader suggested — with a "big maybe" attached — that Clackamas County could see its reopening plan implemented around June 15."
In my meetings with ODE Director Colt Gill, it seems as though the state will be rolling out a separate plan for the reopening of schools, and that all schools will follow the same plan and timeline. We expect to learn more by mid-June.
Next week, we'll get the state revenue forecast and we'll have some clarity about funding for next year. It's unclear whether the legislature will convene a special session to discuss K-12 funding. Our first budget committee meeting is scheduled for May 26.
Our priority right now is deploying devices and internet access to all families who do not have them at home. We are rolling out devices next week. We recently received a shipment of internet hot spots, which should help connect students who have been unable to access online materials. Moving forward, we are committed to providing a device to any student who does not have one.
I want to encourage you to take care of yourself during this challenging time. As we're virtually connected all the time, it's sometimes hard to step away. Exercise, meditation, fresh air - anything you can do to clear your mind can help. If you're having a difficult time managing this crisis, do not hesitate to take advantage of the Employee Assistance Program.
I appreciate your professionalism and care for our students. As we start to wrap up this school year, we're looking ahead to the fall. Patience and perseverance will be key as we determine how to best serve students and families, while keeping everyone safe.
Thank you for your work. Keep going. Take care of yourself and your family. Most importantly, stay well.
Best,
