Staff Changes
Office Para:
Jenny Smith
Congratulations Michele on your retirement! Special message....
Dear Lakewood Families,
I am writing to let you know that I am leaving my position in the front office. With my own kids grown and flown, I have been wanting to reduce my hours to part time, which led me to this difficult decision. While I will miss seeing all of the kids and families on a daily basis, I’m excited to report that I will continue to sub in the office, whenever either of our great staff need me!
I’m also pleased to announce that after interviews on Friday, Jenny Smith was offered and has accepted the position of Office Para. Please join me in giving a warm welcome to Jenny!
I wish all of you the very best, and my most sincere thanks for helping make my time here at Lakewood so special!
Warm Regards,
Michele Czarnecki

EARLY DISMISSAL GUIDELINES
If you must pick your student early, please allow yourself plenty of time to come in, sign your student out and wait for he or she to be called to the office. We do not call students out from class before a parent arrives as that takes away from valuable instruction time. Thank you for understanding this policy.
PE News Corner From Mrs. Christopher
Again welcome back Lakewood Families! We are off to a great start. Students are running, leaping, skipping and learning soccer skills. Please remember to pack gym shoes for your child. It is so important as they are running to have proper shoes.

What is WIN time?
What I Need or WIN is a multi-tier approach to the early identification and support of students with learning and behavior needs. This multi- tier process begins with high-quality instruction and universal screening of all children in the general education classroom. Struggling learners are provided with interventions at increasing levels of intensity to accelerate their rate of learning (Tier 2 support). These services may be provided by a variety of personnel, including general education teachers, special educators, and specialists. In Huron Valley WIN time takes place 4 days a week for 30-45 minutes. During this time frame no new instruction taking place in the classroom, therefore students that leave the classroom during WIN are not "missing" instruction. Progress is closely monitored to assess both the learning rate and level of performance of individual students. Educational decisions about the intensity and duration of interventions are based on individual student response to instruction.
The possible interventions include (but are not limited to) Leveled Literacy Intervention, Intensive Phonological Awareness, or Differentiated Reading Instruction. In lower grades the lessons in these programs focus on identifying word patterns and sight words, using reading strategies to read unknown words, retelling of important ideas and reading books at your child’s instructional reading level. In the upper grades your child will be reading a wide variety of exciting nonfiction books and fiction stories. Lessons will focus on learning new vocabulary, developing smoothness in reading, and deepening understanding of books through conversations around the books read. Lessons include learning about how words work. A team of teachers, Literacy Specialist, and para educators meet every 4-6 weeks to discuss and analyze student data to make decisions to best fit each students needs.

Pick Up/Drop Off and Bus Area/Visitor Parking
The pick up/drop off area is located on the east side of the building. The buses are on the north side of the building, next to the staff and parent parking lot. The furthest west row of the parking lot (closest to the bus lane) will be designated for staff parking only. Parents wishing to walk up may park in the other two rows.
If parents are going to use the drop-off/pick-up area there are a few things that everyone must remember:
· Do not park in the designated pick-up/drop off area as it will stop the flow and will hold up everyone.
· No vehicles should be in the bus lane.
· In order to expedite morning drop-off, please have your child ready to leave the car as you approach the drop off zone. Children should quickly exit the vehicle on the passenger side only, and may get out anywhere along the drop-off sidewalk. Please do not leave the driver’s seat. Pull as far forward to the end of the sidewalk as possible, so multiple cars can unload.
· To expedite pick up in the afternoon, once your child is in your vehicle, please depart promptly to keep the flow of traffic moving. If they require your assistance to buckle up, please pull forward into the loop so we may continue to load other students.
· If you need to spend more time dropping off, or picking your child up , please park in the parking lot and walk up.
· FOR THE SAFETY OF EVERYONE, PLEASE PARK IN DESIGNATED PARKING SPOTS ONLY. Please do not park in the driveway areas of the parking lot or drop children off from this area.
· Please do not park on the grass.
· We will NOT allow students to walk to parked cars at the middle school.
· PLEASE COMMUNICATE THESE GUIDELINES TO ALL CAREGIVERS WHO WILL BE USING PICK UP AND DROP OFF
Health Info
It is inevitable that children get sick from time to time. These guidelines will help to prevent the spread of illness to other students and staff. Children benefit greatly from the rest and fluids provided at home when they are ill.
"A well child belongs in school and a sick child belongs at home" - Oakland County Health Seminar
- FEVER - Depending on how your child feels he/she may attend school with a temperature less than 100 degrees F. It's recommended that a student should be without a fever for 24 hours (without fever reducing medication) before returning to school.
- STOMACHACHE, VOMITING, DIARRHEA - It is recommended that a child with vomiting and/or diarrhea be kept at home until symptoms have resolved for 24 hours and the child is able to keep in food and liquid.
- INFECTION AND ON ANTIBIOTICS - (i.e. respiratory infection) Children are no longer considered contagious after 24 hours of antibiotics, depending on how your child feels they may return to school.
- RASH - If you child has an unusual rash or it is associated with a fever, keep your child home until you have discussed the rash with your Health Care Provider.
- CONTAGIOUS DISEASE: strep throat, impetigo, bacterial pinkeye, may return after 24 hours of treatment with antibiotic.

CHANGE OF CLOTHES - In elementary school we understand that accidents sometimes happen, even with the older kids. It's very helpful for your child to have a simple change of clothes tucked in their locker "just in case". We find students can easily transition back to class if they have a clean pair of clothes to change in to if needed.
MEDICATIONS- We recognize that there are times a student must take medication at school. If your student is required to take medication during school hours an adult must bring in the medication with its original label and with the Plan of Care form filled out by your student's physician. Plan of Care forms can be found at the link below:

Building Security
At Lakewood Elementary, one of our primary focuses is to provide a safe environment for our staff and families. In order to do this, we need your assistance. Please review the following information and make a point to follow these procedures:
- When you need to pick up your child from school, please report to the school office with picture identification and sign them out. We will call your child from his/her classroom. Our teachers are instructed not to release students unless they have been signed out at the office.
- Children are now familiar with the building, and should not need assistance getting to their classroom. If they do need assistance, a staff member will walk them to class.
- Please do not drop your student off early. There is no adult supervision outside in the morning, children are not permitted inside the building until the first bell rings at 9:05. As children arrive in the morning, student safeties will assist in lining up by grade. The official start of the students’ school day is 9:10 AM. Any children who arrive after that will be considered tardy, and a parent must sign the child in at the office.
- Dismissal is 4:07 PM, parents are asked to wait outside when coming to pick up their students.
Attendance
ATTENDANCE CALL BACK SYSTEM
If your child will be absent or late, please call the 24 hour attendance line: (248) 684-8018, to leave a message stating the following:
· Date of absence
· Student Name
· Teacher Name
· Reason for absence: illness, appointment, vacation, etc
If your child is absent and we do not receive a call from you, an automated call will be placed requesting you to verify your child’s absence. An unexcused absence will be recorded if we do not hear from you.
PLEASE CALL THE DESIGNATED
ATTENDANCE LINE AT

IF YOUR CHILD WILL BE ABSENT
OR LATE. If your child will be late and will be buying hot lunch, it is helpful to leave their lunch choice in your message, so it can be ordered for them.
Volunteers
VOLUNTEERS
Parental assistance and involvement is very much appreciated. There are many ways in which a parent may become involved. Some may work directly with the children in the classroom or help in the Media Center or office. Others may present a special activity in the classroom. Sometimes, teachers can use help in preparing materials that can be done in your home.
Volunteers who will be remaining in the building must sign in at the office. Unless you have made special arrangements with the teacher, please do not bring other children with you when you help in a classroom.
CRIMINAL RECORD CHECKS (CRC)
The criminal record check is needed for volunteers, new and current, that will be alone with students. If the volunteer is a parent in a classroom with a teacher, a criminal record check does not need to be performed.
If you volunteer to chaperone for a field trip or to work alone with children, the teacher will then send your form in for processing. Your form must be turned in and processed before you can chaperone or work with children alone. Forms are also available on Lakewood’s website, under Parent Resources, then Forms.
Communication
E-MAIL COMMUNICATION - FAMILY ACCESS
Family Access is our safe, secure and essential tool for communication. If you are not able to log on to Family Access, please call Pupil Personnel at 248-676-8431. They will address any issues you are having.
Report cards, newsletters, classroom, PTA and building information will all be communicated via Family Access. You can also load your student's lunch account and view their balance.
