August 2017 - Welcome Letter
Dear West TV Families,
There has been some work done at West TV during the last two months and it will continue into the fall. We are currently undergoing security upgrades as a result of the 2014 Bond Levy. A double entrance or vestibule has been constructed at the school's front entrance. This will ensure that during the school day, all visitors will enter the building through the office after they are buzzed in by an office staff member. It will take a few more months, but all our entrance doors will have key cards, and all doors will be locked at all times. There will be key cards students can use to pass between buildings. In the next few years I anticipate the windows and roof will be replaced.

He has a master's degree in Early Childhood Development from Loyola University in Chicago and has additional training as a reading specialist. His wife and two children, ages 11 and 7, can often be found with their noses in books when they aren't out in the forest or on mountains or beaches. Andrew loves to read, write, backpack, bicycle and make music. He is looking forward to becoming a part of the community at West TV!

He is looking forward to his first year in education, meeting the staff, and joining Nicole in the Physical Education department!

Amy is excited to return to West TV after a few years of temporary positions, she is ready to join the ranks for a permanent position. Amy started her career in the Beaverton School District as a parent volunteer and when the opportunity arose to join as an Instructional Assistant she jumped on the chance. Amy has worked and volunteered in many grade levels and special education classrooms. Amy loves to ski in the winter, walk on the beach anytime of year, crochet to keep those hands busy and spend the summers at Girl Scout camp.

Class assignments will be emailed home with a short note from the classroom teacher by Wednesday, August 30. Update your child's registration online if you need to change your email address or any other information. Call the school office if you have not received an email by Thursday.
Enrollment Verification
You may have received an email and phone call from the District letting you know that enrollment verification is now taking place online. This will give you the opportunity to update important family information, give technology permissions, and acknowledge reading important school and District information. Follow this link to detailed information about enrollment verification and this link for detailed directions to verify your child's or children's enrollment. If you have any difficulty, please contact the school office.
Meet and Treat
Please join us on Thursday, August 31, from 4:30 to 5:00, to drop off school supplies, meet the classroom teacher, and enjoy a sweet treat on the playground.
New Family Welcome
At 5:00pm, directly after the Meet and Treat, I will host a short and informal New Family Welcome for all brand new families in the school cafeteria. Kindergarten families who attended orientation in January do not need to attend. I will share general school information and answer questions.

Supervision is provided in the gym before school beginning at 8:10am. For the safety of your children, please do not allow them to arrive before supervision is provided. At 8:25am classroom teachers retrieve students from the gym and lead them to class.
Breakfast and Lunch
Breakfast and lunch are served beginning the first day of school. Students may arrive for breakfast in the cafeteria at 8:05. Please send your child with a check made out to West TV Café for deposit into their breakfast/lunch account. Put the check in an envelope with your child’s name on it and place it in the drop box inside the front entrance. Returning students will have the same lunch PIN (personal identification number) as last year and new students will be assigned a PIN upon enrollment. (The PIN is also your child’s student ID and library ID.) Once you have your child’s student ID number, you can create an account to make automatic deposits for breakfast and lunch using the online payment service School Cafe'.
Monthly menus will be emailed with our school newsletter, but you may also visit BSD Nutrition Services webpage or the link on our school website to get current meal information, menus, and meal prices. Information for the Meal Benefits Program (free or reduced lunch prices) are available in the school office, or you can visit the Nutrition Services webpage to find more information.
Bus Route Information
Using your child's student ID number, you may look up the specific route and bus stop information by visiting Transportation website. By August 25, the Transportation Department will send out an email and call families with bus stop information.
Students are expected to be at their bus at least five minutes early until our drivers learn their routes. Don’t worry if the bus is late for pick-up and delivery during the first few weeks of school. Please note, bus drivers do not wait for an adult to be present at the afternoon bus stop.
West TV All Star News and PTC Newsletter
We are working to reduce the amount of communication we send home by paper. The school newsletter, All Star News, and PTC Newsletter are typically mailed on Fridays. Friday emails will include school and PTC fliers, community fliers, and other helpful resources and information. The school newsletter is archived on our school webpage.
Attendance Line
Our school has a 24-hour school Attendance Line. If your child is absent from school for any reason, please call 503-356-2511. The Attendance Line is checked multiple times each day, so please do not call the main office to report an absence.
Parking Lot Safety
Our school has a very small and busy parking lot. To reduce vehicular traffic, I strongly encourage families to send their child on the school bus, if provided, or to walk to and from school. Here is a link to the map of the parking lot indicating the safest planned drop-off and pick up procedure. Adhering closely to the plan will make arrival and dismissal as smooth and as safe as possible. Students who walk to school or ride bikes are asked to be extremely cautious. It is important for students to remember to watch the crossing guard at the crosswalk and obey the stop signs. A crossing guard will lead students across the driveway to the gym and the routine is reversed for walking home.
School Calendar
A school events calendar can be found on the school website. This calendar has our most current events and is updated on a regular basis. The District Calendar is available through this link.
Back to School Picnic
A back to school family gathering and celebration has been a tradition at West TV for more than 40 years. Please join us at the PTC sponsored event on Friday, September 8, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm for some good old-fashioned community fun. The PTC will provide the entire picnic dinner!
Back to School Night
Back to School Night will be held on Thursday, September 14, at 6:00pm. Please put this date on your calendar. Your child’s teacher will share grade level curriculum, homework expectations, classroom routines and procedures, and special activities.
Volunteering
Please volunteer at West TV! There are many activities and programs that you can support by volunteering. If you are interested in helping out, please respond to PTC requests for help. A background check is required for all volunteers for all Beaverton schools. Please visit the District website and click on Community and Volunteer. It can take several weeks to get on the approved volunteer list at the beginning of the year, so please complete the background check as soon as possible.
Beaverton School District Student/Family Handbook and West TV Family Handbook
The District expects families to read the BSD Student & Family Handbook. West TV has two additional handbooks. One is the West TV Family Handbook and the second is our Recess Handbook. Please read all handbooks thoroughly so you and your child understand BSD and West TV expectations. The handbooks are linked and can be found on our school website. You may request a printed copy from the school office.
Most policies and procedures in the handbooks are developed to enhance opportunities for learning, or to keep our school a safe place for all students and staff. The District requires that we have each family acknowledge that they have received, read, and discussed the Student/Family Handbook with their children. When you verify your child's enrollment, you will also complete an acknowledgment form indicating you read the handbooks.
PYP Authorization Application
Many of you know that we have embraced the ambitious goal of changing our overall instructional approach to inquiry based learning. We are working to become an authorized Primary Years Program - International Baccalaureate World School and will apply for our initial authorization on October 1.
Please review the Parent information handout and visit the International Baccalaureate website for more information about PYP and IB World Schools.
Ear Buds
We would like each family to provide their child(ren) with their own personal ear buds for use on computers and iPads for the 2017-2018 school year. Send the ear buds to school as soon as you are able. If there is a financial hardship, please contact the school office.
BSD is Going Paperless
In an effort to reduce the amount of paper used for communication, most of the information shared by the school and District will be through email and our website. This newsletter is the only one that will be printed and mailed home with a few other paper handouts.
Theme
Our theme this year is In Our School - You Be You. (The book You Be You is authored by Linda Krantz.) We are intentionally creating a school environment that embraces a culture of care. We will explore themes of diversity, individuality, and acceptance, with an emphasis on the development of empathy, acknowledging similarities and differences, kindness, and taking action to make our world a better place.
Homework
This newsletter will be printed and mailed home the week of August 21. Included in the mailing will be homework for every student. To get to know each other and learn about our uniquenesses and similarities, we ask that each child (with parent support) complete a You Be You rock fish. Directions: Use words and pictures to tell about you. Be creative and colorful or plain and simple. The choice is yours. The only restriction is to not to exceed the 9 x 12 sheet of paper. Each one of our creations will be decorating the halls of our school. Please return it the first week of school.
We look forward to a fantastic year of learning.
Sincerely,
Kalay McNamee
