PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear PK8 Families,
Unfortunatley I was not able to be at school this week, as I was at home battling COVID! 🤒. It's during weeks like this that I am truly grateful for the amazing staff we have at Paonia K8! It was encouraging to hear how well the students did under the guidance of our Assistant Principal, Heather Savory. Heather has come on strong in her first year as a school administrator and I appreciate being able to lean on her so much this week. Our teachers put in a tremendous effort creating continuity in daily routines and instruction, ensuring that the 'ship sails on' even if the captain is 'overboard'. In all seriousness, I appreciate everyone's efforts in making PK8 such a special place!
Continuing our efforts to support homework, here are some tips on how to break down longer assignments that your child may have:
- Figure out how much time your child has. Count backward from the project’s due date to see how many days your child has to complete it.
- Figure out how long each work session should be. Estimate how much stamina your child will have for the kinds of work involved. Compare how much time is available with how long your child can work at a stretch. This helps you figure out how to help your child “chunk” the work, or do a bit each day.
- Write down each task. Work with your child to write down on index cards every task the assignment involves, from going to the library to designing the report cover. For each task, ask if your child has any questions or concerns. Write them down on the back of the card.
- Put the task cards in order. Help your child decide what comes first, second, etc. For instance, doing research comes before proofreading the paper.
- Assign a deadline for each task. Work backward to come up with reasonable due dates. Address your child’s questions as you create the schedule.
- Review your child’s progress. Check in regularly to see how your child is doing and if the project is on schedule. If not, help your child revise the plan.
When looking over these steps, what stands out is the communication involved between the student and parent. By talking with your child about their assignments, parents gain insight into what learning is going on in the classroom, and have a better understanding of how much time is spent on projects in school and what needs to be done at home. If there is ever any confusion, please reach out to your child's teacher to get clarification.

Grief Group for Students
Has your child's life been touched by the death of a loved one?
Some common reactions to loss are:
• A decline in school performance.
• Changes in sleeping and eating patterns.
• Feeling that nobody understands.
• Changes in behavior. Your child may react to situations in an unusual manner, such as being angry more frequently and with little apparent reason.
If your child is in grades 6-8, we invite them to attend a grief group now being formed and co- facilitated by Hopewest Kids and Ms. Lukez (school counselor). The group will meet weekly for six to eight weeks for 40 minute sessions.
Each session will include grief education and small group discussion. Activities such as writing, art, and literature will assist participants in coping with issues of grief and loss.
A signed parent/guardian consent form is required. For more information, please contact Ms. Lukez at 970-527-4882 or Claire Dauwe from HopeWest Kids at 970-874-6823.
