Blaze Bulletin
Edition 5 - Week of September 18
Greetings...
Dear teachers,
Thanks to so many of you who have already planned and implemented your community service with your C&I classes! Please send me pictures if you think of it as you implement your community service - I love to give kids a "shout out" on Twitter!
Here are some service projects going on or in the making:
Making some artistic motivational posters to put around the school - including inspirational quotes, MLK Jr quotes, Gandhi quotes, quotes from Rachel, "You're not Average" and similar messages.
Raising money for the Wilson County Disaster Animal Response Team. The students have decided on a one day Bake Sale. They want to sell baked goods outside the cafeteria during all three lunches and donate to the Response Team.
Conducting a free clinic at the Boys and Girls club and in collaboration with a Capstone Project - and do a Read to Succeed at Blackman Elementary.
Raising money for Harvey relief to the Red Cross (over $700 raised and sent)!
Conducting a jacket/blanket drive, for the impending cold weather. We will get boxes to put the items in, and have a dad collect them and take them to The Nashville Rescue Mission.
Making 5 large posters to hang in the school. We want to put Rachel's challenges on them.
If you have not planned your community service, and if you need help, please don't hesitate to contact us. We can help brainstorm!
Have a great weekend!
Leisa Justus
GRADE REMINDER...
Teachers should enter an average of 2 grades per week. Each week the grades should be updated in iNow. This is the way students and parents can follow progress.
Fall Safety Drills begins.....
Fire Safety Educational Announcement
A fire can breakout with little or no warning. The more prepared you are, the safer you will be. Have a meeting location at school and at home that everyone will gather after a fire evacuation. A meeting location will help you quickly verify that everyone made it out safely.
BEP Mini-grant workshop BEP Grant Writing Inservice is Thursday, September 28, room G-27 from 3:30 - 4:30.

Deadline for Spring Grant: The Fall 2017 BEP Nissan Teacher Minigrant application period is open from September 8th to October 20th, 2017.
Could you use $500 to provide learning opportunities for your students beyond the core curriculum? Are you interested in incorporating STEM? The BEP Nissan Teacher Mingrant offers classroom funding for up to $500 to promote innovation and “meaningful learning” within our local schools. Learn from past winners and gain insight into the process to increase your chance of being granted additional funds for your classroom.

Teacher Spotlight....Ms. Kristie Farrington
A total of $731.42 was raised through donations at BHS and will be donated to the American Red Cross.
Mr. Zimmerman and Mrs. Monson had the most donations with $73 and will receive pizza and doughnuts in the near future.
Ms. Holl, Mrs. McDowell, Mr. Doherty and Coach Trakas all raised enough to get free doughnuts.
Thank you for your generosity and allowing mine and Mrs. Brewer's students to come into your classrooms and collect. It was a great feat for many of them and they feel such pride with the result.

Tech crew at work in the library
“Do you or your students need tech help? The IT Clinical students, with the generous help of Kaitlin Brown, Brian Seadorf, and Misti Jenkins, have a “Tech Crew” table in the library during 4th period where they can answer questions or help with basic configuration of devices. We can also try to see what other services we can offer you if you require more advanced help (just basic diagnostics , malware or virus removal, and even hardware replacement – including phone screens!) which we would work on for a small donation to our program (100% is used to finance student certification tests). There should be two students manning this table during all three lunch periods, and they will be dressed in business casual dress ready to help everyone that comes by. No question too easy or too hard – we will try our best to answer everything!”

Sunshine Fund....
Here at Blackman we have a sunshine fund. It allows us to send flowers to staff members in the case of death of a loved one. The fund is getting a little low. We used it several times last year so I am asking that you donate. A $5 or $10 donation would be appreciated if you are able to. You can bring your donations to me in E-11 or put them in my mailbox. Please include your name so that I can write you a receipt and record it on a log sheet to turn in. Please help us keep this fund going by donating. It's a great thing to be able to show staff members that we care in difficult times.
I will be taking donations until the end of the month. Thanks again!
