Proportions Project

As we progress through our rates, ratios, and proportions units, this week students will begin working on a proportions project. For this project students will take their measurements and will scale themselves down to the size of an action figure. After completing their calculations, students will accurately draw their action figures.

To connect this particular project with our other content areas, students will each be assigned an element from the periodic table. They will pretend this element gave them superpowers and will design a costume and superhero profile to represent their action figures.

Language Workshop

Having completed the book Touching Spirit Bear, students are currently working on a five paragraph paper that will be due at the end of the week. In this paper they are arguing whether or not the protagonist of the novel, Cole, has changed throughout the course of the book. We will spend a great deal of time in language workshop this week working on organizing this writing, with a particular focus on introductory and concluding paragraphs.

Largely through language workshop, students will continue to learn about significant historic events that occurred during the 1900s in the United States.

Next week we will begin discussing women's suffrage by evaluating various articles and readings. In this study discussion students will work to compare women's rights across time periods in our nation. In addition, they will gain an understanding of how women's rights are still limited in various countries throughout the world.

In particular we will focus on 6 topics to develop this understanding. They are:

  • Rosie the Riveter
  • Wonder Woman
  • Malala
  • Suffrage Movement of the 1900s
  • Women in Combat
  • Women in Politics

November Scholastic Order

I want to remind everyone that I will be placing a Scholastic order on Friday, November 20. This will be the last order I place before winter break. If you are interested in placing a secret order for holiday gifts please let me know and we can make arrangements so that your student is unaware that the order was placed. Students have already received the November and holiday order forms, but they can also be accessed online. You can place online orders here: https://orders.scholastic.com/L3RJB
