MVMS Art Students Create Artistic Masks with Recycled Materials

Big image

Last month, Mountain Valley Middle School art students created masks out of recycled volleyballs and milk jugs. They used a foam cutter, tools from the wood shop, glue, screws, nails and plaster-of-paris to create the beautiful masks. Some of the students were able to wear their masks to the fall festival. The masks now decorate the hallways, teacher's lounge, and front offices of Mountain Valley Middle School.

Meet Stacie Glowka

A violinist of over 18 years, Stacie Glowka grew up in San Antonio, Texas. After two years of music education (University of Texas–San Antonio and Baylor University) followed by completion of her degree in Culinary Arts, Stacie completed an undergraduate degree in music education, Summa Cum Laude, at Southwestern University in December of 2013. Stacie was the 2012-2013 Arts Festival Director for Delta Omicron, studied conducting with Dr. Lois Ferrari, completed extensive study and has over 11 years of experience in education.

Stacie has performed with the Round Rock Symphony, San Angelo Symphony, Williamson County Symphony Orchestra as concertmaster, chamber music groups, and sang harmony vocals and fiddled with various Texas country music bands. She pursued a study in Baroque violin and early music, and has performed with the Austin Baroque Orchestra. She has twice participated in the Conductors’ Institute (2012 & 2014) where she studied with Peter Bay, conductor of the Austin Symphony Orchestra, and Dr. Ferrari, while working with and conducting a wind ensemble made up of Austin Symphony Orchestra musicians. Throughout her years, she has continuously sought opportunities to share her passion of music and children by teaching in a variety of settings. She volunteered multiple years as an assistant teacher for the 5th Grade Strings program in San Antonio, began teaching privately in 2002, taught cooking classes to kids at the Young Chefs Academy, and served as a sectional coach, clinician, and strings camp instructor in Georgetown and Round Rock.

Stacie currently holds the position as the new Orchestra Director in Comal ISD, where she is starting the program at the secondary level, at both Spring Branch Middle School and Smithson Valley Middle School. Stacie feels that she was born to teach – music is her passion and education is her purpose. Stacie has a beautiful 5-year-old daughter, Kayla, who shares her love and passion for the arts and learning, and is in Kindergarten this year in CISD.
