Notes and Updates
International Week has come and gone and it was a wonderful week of learning about different countries. Students enjoyed creating artifacts that represent their special country and presenting it to the class.
In math, students reviewed their addition and subtraction strategies. We focused on the 10+ way to solve problems by breaking apart numbers to make 10, then adding the remaining numbers to 10. For example if you have 9+3, you break the three into 2 and 1 then add 9+1=10 and 10+2=12. Finally we reviewed how to label our picture during problem solving to show our thinking. Labeling helps our students understand the meaning of the numbers and helps the organize the information.
In reading, students continued to learn about their characters by discovering how characters feelings can change over time. We read "Stellaluna" and discovered the different feelings she had throughout the story. Then they practiced on their own. We aslo reviewed making inferences.
In writing, students worked on how to describe feeling by showing and not telling. They have to think of the physical reaction they had and facial expressions. Then they also reviewed how to make an introduction to a story using dialogue, a question, describing the scene, or a flashback. Finally the were introduced to punctuation.
In social studies, students began to learn how to research. They each have a research notebook and worked on looking in books and online. We used pebblego to discover more about an ecosystem. Pebblego can be found on the elementary library home page.

No Homework this week!!!
Over the break I always give students the option to practice the skills they have learned at school. I have informed them today that if they choose to do so they can make a book of their holiday and then present it when they come back. They also have the option to read books from home or on razkids and record what they read in their 100 readers recording sheet. Finally they can practice their math by playing a game from the packet given on Thursday. This is completely optional for you and your child and the purpose is to enhance your holiday fun.
On Thursday a binder of math games was sent home in your child's home bag in a brown envelope. Some of these are games we have played before, and many we will be playing in class after the new year. Please feel free to use these as a fun way to keep your child's skills sharp over the break. The cards needed for each game are included with the packet on yellow card stock. Please keep this game binder because we will be using them as part of the homework assignments.
