Dressing a baby

How to carefully put clothing on a baby

When dressing your baby, supporting her on your lap, stretch the garment neckline and pull it over your baby’s head. Use your fingers to keep it from catching on her face or ears. Don’t try to push your baby’s arm through the sleeve. Instead, put your hand into the sleeve from the outside, grasp your baby’s hand, and pull it through.

When undressing, take off the sleeves one at a time while you support your baby’s back and head.

Then stretch the neckline, lifting it free of your baby’s chin and face as you gently slip it off.

Winter clothing

Easy-on, easy-off outer layers. A snowsuit or bunting provides a great buffer against the cold and snow. Snowsuits have form-fitting legs and arms, and most are equipped with hoods, while buntings are more like little sleeping bags, with a seam between the legs to make stroller snap-ins easier. A hat and mittens. A soft hat will help keep out the cold. If your baby's hands are exposed, pull some mittens on them

Spring clothing

In the same way that you would dress yourself in layers to peel off or add on as temps shift, same goes here. Start with a short-sleeved onesie, layer on pants and a long-sleeved shirt, and top with a light hoodie or other sweatshirt as needed. Socks go under booties. If the cold creeps up, be prepared to pop the whole baby in some bunting for chilly (yet refreshing for you both) outdoor walks.

Summer clothing

Step 1

Dress your newborn in a base layer of a cotton onesie, which is a T-shirt with snaps that fasten between the legs to hold it in place. Choose light colors to keep your baby cooler if he goes outdoors. The onesie allows you to add layers or take them off as necessary with the onesie still providing coverage.

Step 2

Add a pair of shorts, a skirt or a pair of lightweight pants over the onesie. Choosing a short item to go on bottom allows your newborn's legs to stay cooler, especially when she goes outdoors. For a girl, a newborn sundress can replace the onesie and bottom combination.

Fall clothing

Layer it on. Babies need a hat outside. Babies need an extra layer. Never over bundle.
