Spring of 2020 has challenged staff and students to find a new normal for learning, connected us in new ways and required our teachers to accomplish learning goals from afar. What I have learned most through this process is how much I appreciate the expertise our teachers bring to the learning process, the ways in which our students continue to work hard to grow and the overall support our parents continue to give. I am grateful for our Northpoint community because regardless of the circumstances that challenge us, we contine to rise above adversity together.


I will continue to communicate with you often, as will your child's teacher. Please make sure you're connected to the classroom through the links and directions provided to you by their teacher. All families should be connected to Family Access in Skyward. Directions for that access is below if you're not already connected. As of Monday, August 17th, you will be able to view your child's teacher placement through Skyward Family Access.

If we have your correct email and mailing address, then you should be getting all of our communication. Be on the lookout for a letter from us next week. Please contact us if you did not get a mailed letter.

Virtual Learning and Google Classroom

Our current virtual learning plan goes through September 11th, after which in-person learning is scheduled to begin (provided safety parameters set the the St. Joesph County Health Department are met). Families who wish to remain virtual will have that option. In our virtual learning environment, our teachers will work with your child(ren) daily via the electronic platform of Google Classroom. There will be a combination of synchronous (live) and asyncronous (recorded) instruction. We are committed to the success of ALL students in the virtual learning environment including those students needing support from exception education or ENL services. Interventions for students in the RtI process will also continue.


VIRTUAL INSTRUCTION


Virtual Learning

  • Student day will be a blend of synchronous and asynchronous learning.

  • Students will likely start with an opening community circle focused on SEL and relationship building.

  • Instruction will be a blend of live sessions, recorded lessons, and differentiated guided practice.

  • Teachers will be available for instructional assistance during the school day.

  • A teacher-staffed evening helpdesk will be piloted as a resource for parents and students who are not able to participate in daytime learning activities.


Your Child's teacher will send you directions with how to log into Google Classroom. Please check your email next week for updates.

After hours Homework Helpdesk

In order to provide students with after hours academic support during virtual learning, we are piloting a P-H-M homework helpdesk. We have assembled a team of elementary, exceptional education, and content specific secondary teachers who will be available via email from 7:00-9:00pm, Monday-Thursday. These helpdesk teachers will be responsive to student and/or parent emails, providing specific academic support as needed. This might include responding to an email or even an interactive Google Video Hangout to provide academic guidance. Additionally, the helpdesk teachers will communicate back to the student's regular teacher related to what supports were provided so we can work collaboratively, creating the best possible virtual learning environment for our students.

Students and/or parents can contact the after-hours homework helpdesk by emailing homeworkhelp@phm.k12.in.us starting on Monday, August 24th.

Materials and Chromebook Distribution

The two days that we have set for pick up of materials are;


August 17th - 3-6pm

August 18th - 8am-2:00pm

MATERIALS WILL NOT BE READY UNTIL 3p.m. on AUGUST 17th. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PICK THEM UP AT AN EARLIER TIME. IF THESE TIMES DON'T WORK FOR YOU , WE WILL MAKE SPECIAL ARRANGEMENTS AFTER AUGUST 18th.


Please follow the traffic pattern listed in the graphic below to pick up your child's (children's) needed supplies and school materials. If you have any items to return from last spring (i.e. library books, textbooks), please bring them with you to hand off to staff members assisting.

IF YOU CHECKED OUT A CHROMEBOOK IN THE SPRING KEEP IT FOR USE IN THE FALL.


Procedures:

1. Put your child's name (or children) and grade level on a piece of paper in your front dashboard.

2. A staff member (who will be masked) will bring your child's materials to your car. Do NOT exit your vehicle. There are no visitors allowed in the building at this time.

3. We appreciate your cooperation in also wearing a mask when interacting with the Northpoint staff assisting you.


CHROMEBOOKS::

Chromebooks will be available for any student needing one, including kindergarteners. You are welcome to use any home device you have, but there may be a few extra steps for children to connect if not using a PHM issued Chromebook. If you start the year without one, but change your mind, you can still contact the office to request one. These will be available on the day we distribute the materials as well. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SEND AN EMAIL REQUESTING A CHROMEBOOK. THEY WILL BE CHECKED OUT TO ALL STUDENTS.

Northpoint Open-House and Back to School nights

Unfortunately we will not be hosting our traditiional ice-cream social and parent information nights in person this school year. Instead we will be providing information on a virtual platform. We are working on creating videos, virtual tours and slide presentations to push out to you before the start of school.

Our Kindergarten team is working on a virtual orientation for parents that will be ready by August 19th.

Attendance

During virtual learning, please work with your child's teacher on completing assigned work in a timely manner. If your student is unable to interact with their teacher on a consistent basis, or complete their work, please reach out to the teacher to develop a plan.
