High School Highlights
Weekly Updates from Big Walnut High School
Week of September 5
Please remember, there is no school on Monday, September 5 due to the Labor Day holiday. Please enjoy a restful and relaxing day off! On Wednesday, we will have our first "Eagle Time" of the year. Each Wednesday, we adjust our schedule and offer an additional period called Eagle Time. This is a chance for students to get extra help from teachers, make up or retake a test, or work on other academic goals. Please note that our bell schedule is adjusted and late start students will need to arrive earlier than normal. Please see Schoology for the adjusted schedule.
Our first round of parent-teacher conferences will be held on Wednesday, September 14 from 4:00-7:30. To schedule one or more conferences, please reach out to the main office or to your student's teachers directly. We hope to see you there!
As always, please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teachers, school counselor or the administration if you have any questions or concerns. Feel free to contact the main office at 740-965-3766 between the hours of 7:00 and 3:15.
Parent Drop-Off and Pick-Up
Parents, after you drop off or pick up your student(s), if you head towards I-71, please consider making a right and exiting using Kintner Parkway rather than Miller Drive. This would help us alleviate some of the traffic congestion we are seeing! Thank you!
A few reminders from our front office...
Please remember, if your student is going to be absent, running late, or needs to leave early please call the attendance line ahead of time and leave a message at 740-965-7776. If a student is leaving early please call a minimum of 2 hours prior to the student's departure time.
We are also asking that parents/guardians call or provide a note ahead of time giving the student permission to sign themselves out and meet you outside in the loop. No student may leave early unless a parent/guardian has given permission. Even if your student is 18, they must have prior approval from a parent or guardian.
Finally, if parents need to drop off any items, please leave them on the table just inside the first secure door of our main entrance. There are post-it notes and pens available for you to label items. Please text your student to let them know their items are there. Students will be able to pick up their items in between classes. We will not be calling students out of class for dropped off items unless it is an urgent matter.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation!
Reminder for Senior Families:
We want to remind all our seniors that they are required by the State of Ohio to have their meningitis vaccination. Proof of this vaccination from your health care provider or immunization exemption form must be submitted no later than October 1st. DPHD is offering an MS/HS Vaccine Clinic for those students who are still in need of the required vaccines. This will be a DRIVE THRU clinic only at BWMS (lower lots by the softball field). Parents must register their child PRIOR to the clinic, no drive-ups will be permitted. The deadline for consent is September 9th. See below for more information. Please contact Megan Truax, district nurse, with any questions or concerns (megantruax@bwls.net). Thank you!
Speed Dating in Global Studies
Students in Global Studies did a little "speed dating" about "Songs About History" in class this week. Their research and presentations centered around what is history, who or what makes history and how do we remember history. They students loved this different presentation style!
BWHS Academic Boosters
Academic Boosters - who are we? We are a group of organized parents who provide support to help improve the academic experience for all students, parents, and staff at BWHS. We provide An Evening of Excellence in September to recognize sophomores, juniors, and seniors who earned a 3.5 GPA the previous year. We sponsor the annual Academic and Military Signing in the spring for graduating seniors who have been offered college scholarships and graduating seniors who have enlisted in Military Services. Students who earn a 5 on their AP exam receive a High Five yard sign provided by and delivered to their home by members of the Academic Boosters. Our staff at BWHS is crucial to the success of our students and the academic booster parents show them just how much we appreciate them by providing a few very small tokens of appreciation during staff appreciation week in April. We have many other ideas of ways we can expand and continue to support the academic efforts of our students and staff! We are looking forward to a productive and fun year!
Meetings are typically at 6:30pm on the second Monday of each month. (No December meeting.)
This year, our meetings are as follows: 9/6*, 10/10, 11/7, 1/9, 2/13, 3/13, 4/10, 5/8.
*Please note 9/6 is a Tuesday.

Math Peer Tutoring
We are pleased to share that Mu Alpha Theta (our math honor society) currently has 21 members with Jeevan Konduru serving as 22-23 and 23-24 President. The main goal of Mu Alpha Theta is to support our students by offering peer tutoring during student center when schedules allow. Interested students and families should contact their student's math teacher or email Mrs. Dawson (Mu Alpha Theta advisor) at kathydawson@bwls.net or Jeevan Konduru at 280811@bwls.net to ask about availability.

Thanks BW Community!
Our BW Boys' and Girls' Tennis programs would like to thank the BW community for helping them to recycle our plastic bags and turn them into benches for our new HS courts. The drive has been incredibly successful, but they aren't finished yet. Please continue to collect your plastic bags and drop them off to the collection boxes at the high school, middle school, Community Library and Big Walnut Apparel.
