Brief Background
Rosa Parks was a Civil Rights Activist who refused to surrender her bus seat in Montgomery, Alabama to a white passenger. Park's refusal to give up her seat sparked a world wide boycott that helped create and launch a nationwide efforts to end segregation of public facilities.

This photo was taken after she was arrested for her refusal to comply with the bus driver who demanded her to move to the back of the bus.
Segregation
The difference in skin color kept people from intermingling in public places. Rosa defied these social norms.
