Martin Luther King Day of Service
Students, parents, and staff members joined together to sort donations and tie blankets to benefit Foster Angels on Earth, a local organization that assists children in foster care. Our goal was to create 10 care packages; we exceeded that goal and were able to create 15 packages and still had many toiletries to donate. Thank you to everyone who generously donated and came out to participate. Also, a special thank you to Mrs. Jennifer Zalewski who helped organize this project and partnership. This was a great way to "Be Present, Create Change" in our community!
MA Team Competes at Future City Competition
On Saturday, January 19, 2019, 8th grade student representatives presented their vision of a city of the future (GrittyCity) at the Philadelphia Region’s Future City Competition. The Future City Competition (www.futurecity.org), challenges students to use the engineering and design process to imagine, design and create a city of the future while focusing on a particular challenge. This year’s challenge was to design a resilient power grid for their future city that could withstand and quickly recover from the impacts of a natural disaster.
To prepare their design, students worked closely with their engineering mentor (and LM alum) Greg Jakubowski. Murray Avenue’s GrittyCity featured vertical farming, carbon sequestration, moving parts, a water infiltration plan for flooding, in addition to the many other futuristic aspects. The students presented their city to a group of judges, then spent the next 3 hours interviewing with engineers from various disciplines about particular aspects of their city, and showcasing their city for others. In the end, Murray Avenue’s design won two awards: Best Plumbing Innovation, presented by the American Society of Plumbing Engineers, Philadelphia Chapter and Best Building Technology presented by Johnson Controls, Inc. Congratulations to our 8th graders! We are very proud of your performance!
