Kindergarten
September 9th
Reading
These lessons have focused on:
1. Using the cover of a book to identify the title, author, illustrator and predict what the story is about
2. Identifying the difference between a letter, a word, and a space. We practiced finding short words and long words and counting the letters in a word. This helps us when we point to each word will we read.
3. Understanding where to start reading on a page and how to read from left to right and then sweep back to the beginning of the next line.
4. Reading the pictures, or using the pictures to help us read the words or understand the story. We can then retell the story by using the pictures to help us remember!
We then practiced these skills during our independent reading and partner reading. Our favorite part of readers' workshop is partner reading. We love finding a special place in the room to read together!

Using Scissors
1. Your thumb should be in the small hole on top.
2. Cut away from your body!
3. Hold the paper with your other hand (thumb on top again).
4. Turn the paper, not your scissors!
We went through step by step to practice using our scissors safely!
